So what's wrong with Asian hair?

"I specialize in the safest most natural application method using a strand by strand technique and the finest quality loose European hair, not the cheaper substandard Asian weft hair often used to cut corners."

Confused

Is this normal? I don't have/want hair extensions, this is an ad I saw on a local group's webpage.

Asian hair is often coarser and would most likely need to be bleached many times to get to blonde/lighter colours, resulting in weaker and damaged hair.

I wonder if it's also that she's saying that weft hair is cheaper (the stuff that comes in a curtain on a tape or whatever) than the loose strands, and has just mixed Euro/Asian in there as it's more common for asian hair to come in weft form?

Nombrechanger has it on the nose though - if I had Asian hair put into my fine hair it would look odd, not just the colour, but the straightness, and the difference in individual hair width.

HerrenaisnowHowlerMonkey · 30/05/2013 06:53

Right, I understand. It was the 'substandard' that caught my attention - surely it's unusual to state that another ethnic group has low quality hair?!

I hear you there OP. I think the original statement is bizzare. I think Asian hair is thick and beautiful, and definitely not substandard. I hope what nombrechanger says is right, and that it's implying that it's darker and thicker and that means it needs a lot more bleach to achieve the blond or lighter colours.

EarlyInTheMorning · 30/05/2013 10:16

I'd hope the 'substandard' term refers to how the hair ends up after being treated to be suitable for the European market.

Asian hair in its natural state is usually thick, shiny and gorgeous in my opinion.

OhWouldYouJust · 30/05/2013 11:19

This is probably due to the harvesting methods used for Asian hair, women in 3rd world countries selling their hair for a pittance etc, unless its 'temple' hair - where the hair is sold to a temple in return for a good price and religious reasons, Asian women are often exploited for their hair.

Also their is a key part of the hair structure called the Medulla, not always present this component of hair determines its ability to be styled, curled etc. Asian hair often lacks this, making it less versatile.

Also European hair is often more ethically sourced and traceable.

Also the hair texture is often different to European hair so may look put of place in Caucasian hair.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 30/05/2013 15:46

Would european hair really be more ethical? I'd think they came from some poor Eastern European country where women sell it for a pittance too? I'm thinking along the lines of travellers in Romania. Or Albanians or Chechnya.

I have walked behind many an Asian woman seething at how glossy, thick and gorgeous their hair is. [sigh]

HerrenaisnowHowlerMonkey · 30/05/2013 21:11

I had never really considered the differences in hair structure between different ethnic groups - how interesting.

I did wonder if the initial 'substandard' comment meant that there was synthetic hair woven into the Asian extensions rather than just being pure human hair, but a bit of wiki research into the word 'weft' indicates not. You learn something new every day!

Surely you'd be peeved by this advert if you were Asian and you wanted hair extensions, though? I mean, the implication is that your hair is a bit rubbish.

I just couldn't wear extensions, it creeps me out and I imagine it being like Anne Hathaway in Les Miserable. Sorry I know that's a bit immature.
