... will you tell me what the hell to do with my hair?

It's long and greying brown and just kind of hangs there

I want a style, but I need it to be low maintenance and easy to look after.

Ideas? Please?

aSh yes, problem number 2... I just moved to a new town so need a new hairdresser. Do the consultations you read about in magazines actually exist? Would a hairdresser be happy to spend a decent amount of time discussing it? I usually just get a 'so, what will it be today?'

OP posts:
BadHairYear · 27/05/2013 22:32

Right, so keratin treatment, colour (chocolate brown or reddish), possibly a longish layered bob...

What about Karlie Kloss -drool

I love love her new hair, you wouldn't have to go as short but could you move towards the look? FWIW, I think her extremely subtle and gorgeous highlights are the way to go, rather than red.

ItsintheBag · 28/05/2013 12:14

I think it just needs a decent cut.As in a good hairdresser as apposed to lobbing it all off.
With fine hair I find it doesn't tend to hold a style so well,so a good cut is a must.
I would get some good layers for shape, take a way the width and take an inch of the bottom. All these beach hair/messy bedhair DO take work.
Stick a semi perm color in a warm brown for added shine.

BadHairYear · 28/05/2013 21:17

Ooh, I'm loving the Karlie Kloss link. Bet that takes some looking after though.

OP, you under sold yourself, you look, lovely. Why don't you keep the length, get a fringe and a few layers to soften round your face and just run straighteners through it in the morning so it looks super shiny and sleek.

Awks · 28/05/2013 21:32

Nar get it shorter shoulder length with some layers in a choppy bob like this <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=choppy+bob+hairstyles&hl=en&biw=1680&bih=882&tbm=isch&tbnid=faqluGIFEMCr1M:&imgrefurl=www.fashionsplanet.com/choppy-bob-hairstyles-for-thick-hair/&docid=QNgFLQ5eGG9SxM&imgurl=www.fashionsplanet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Choppy-Bob-Hairstyles-for-Thick-Hair-1.jpg&w=768&h=860&ei=QBSlUbetIsW-0QWElYGgBQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=884&vpy=137&dur=281&hovh=238&hovw=212&tx=148&ty=116&page=1&tbnh=135&tbnw=118&start=0&ndsp=69&ved=1t:429" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=choppy+bob+hairstyles&hl=en&biw=1680&bih=882&tbm=isch&tbnid=faqluGIFEMCr1M:&imgrefurl=www.fashionsplanet.com/choppy-bob-hairstyles-for-thick-hair/&docid=QNgFLQ5eGG9SxM&imgurl=www.fashionsplanet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Choppy-Bob-Hairstyles-for-Thick-Hair-1.jpg&w=768&h=860&ei=QBSlUbetIsW-0QWElYGgBQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=884&vpy=137&dur=281&hovh=238&hovw=212&tx=148&ty=116&page=1&tbnh=135&tbnw=118&start=0&ndsp=69&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0,i:184

Dilidali · 28/05/2013 21:37

Agree, you look lovely and have a very cute boy:)
Long bob, layered. I would try parting it on one side. A good hair mask. Some morrocan oil?
Fringes are a bit of a pain to maintain.
I have never coloured my hair, so can't advise you there at all.

mrscumberbatch · 28/05/2013 21:49

You need to move the volume in your hair from at the bottom- it looks dull at the top.

You can keep your long hair if you want but get lots of layers cut in and start quite high up for volume.

I also think your hair is a bit too dark (might be photo) so it washes out your lovely porcelain skin.... maybe a warmer chestnutty brown?

But yes, you're a bit of a natural looker Envy

NarkyNamechanger · 28/05/2013 21:54

Wow you're really pretty. :)

bella65 · 28/05/2013 22:06

I think you could do with a light fringe or even a half fringe- you have a high forehead. This might take some work with Frizzease etc and some hair straighteners though. I think a graduated bob with some chin length tendrils- and the rest a bit longer.

Have you ever tried a side parting? I always think that centre partings can look a tiny bit dated and more suited to teens.

Try it?

BadHairYear · 28/05/2013 23:03

Awwww . Thanks. You're all so lovely!

Fringes are usually a bit of a disaster with my hair, as they tend to go curly (not a good look) and I try soooo hard to get side partings to work but my hair just persists with the centre. Any tips to train it?

I love the choppy bob pic but it's a bit scarily short (wimp!) Might try a longer, choppier version first and work towards it.

Sorry! I know i sound negative ('yes but...') but i really am taking on board your ideas and have been researching hairdressers today so might bite the bullet and do it tomorrow Thanks

You have lovely hair and it suits your face. Very pretty face!

Maybe, some colour? Subtle, not OTT. And a trim or a few layers (long layers) to give some movement? fringes are a faff and itll cut off half your face, so I'd say, don't be talked into one of thos. A bob can be hard work so, think about how much time you want to spend with a hair dryer!

Post and show us would you, when it's done

bella65 · 29/05/2013 08:55

I'd say you have to persevere with the side parting! I had a centre parting until I was around 17, then switched to a side parting. it may take a few months for the hair to behave. Really yank pull it across when you blow dry it- or even try a very high side parting- just off centre?

nellyjelly · 29/05/2013 11:31

Yes agree and use a clip when you can to keep it there.

BadHairYear · 29/05/2013 12:55

Right. I did it Grin

I can't post a photo yet because, um, I have a black eye (thanks innocent-looking-toddler-in-the-bobble-hat!) but basically it's still long, but with lots more layers and all the split ends cut off, shaped around my face (shortest layers are about chin length) with an all over semi permanent not much different to (but much shinier than!) the old colour and 'hidden' highlights.

So, thank you for your advice. I took on board a lot of it and am slowly working towards a shorter, choppier style.

It's still a centre parting because of a very strong cowlick, but I might try a kind of diagonal parting when I do it myself.

Right now, I love it, but I am a little concerned about whether I'll be able to reproduce the very sleek finish the hairdresser has given me.

Thanks again Thanks

oh do post a pic please!

sounds good and well done for taking the plunge.

You may be able to do a kind of zig zag parting- do a straight line parting then flip little chunks over to each side so it looks messy!

DorisShutt · 30/05/2013 06:13

Sounds lovely.

In respect of what a hairdresser can produce - mine never looks like it; I console myself with the fact that they are above me working down, I'm reaching up so of course it won't be the same...

Looking forward to see the photo - once the black eye vanishes naturally! Wink

handcream · 30/05/2013 15:25

Dont dismiss GHD's which can sort out a hair that looks a bit scrappy in no time. I use the straighteners on my fringe every morning, they only take seconds to heat up and then run them quickly over.

Makes a huge difference

AuntySib · 30/05/2013 19:15

Have to say that I have(had) hair like yours, and found a longish bob very easy to deal with. Just blast upside dopwn with hairdryer, then use GHDs very quickly. Or even, hairdryer blast day 1, GHDs day 2, still OK day 3 ,GHD plus dry shampoo day 4 ........
Have just radically changed my hair, and wish I hadn't!
