Looking for an idiotproof updo for just about shoulder length hair

I've just tried 3 youtube updos and I have no idea how two carefully placed bobbypins can keep all your hair in place. I need a simple (I'm not completing with the wedding party) updo which with the careful application of a can of hairspray stands a chance of playing in place... I'm out of my depth here - can someone point me in the direction of a bobbypin manual ?

Sorry I haven't read full thread - explaining hair dos is not half as complicated as understanding them written down but hard enough so goodness knows how you are managing!

Have you thought of plaiting it first then bobby pinning it? I do that when I need a quick up do for work. You can twist one big plait into a bun (I have fine hair too so my bun is small despite length :( but plaiting gives it a bit more interest)

Or you can have a plait either side and cross them over the top of your head and bobby pin like here howtoi.com.au/do-a-german-braid/ I sometimes add a decorative pin or flower (tiny ones unless I want to look bridesmaidy)

There is a quick pen twirl and stab that I use every day - it's easy to show and hard to explain but basically pull hair into length like you are going to ponytail it, then twirl hair around a pen or crochet hook or other long straight thin object then stab the end into the hair as close to scalp as possible. I do this when hair is wet and it comes down again when dry in lovely waves as well

Oh the donut makes more sense now - thank you all.

Vicar - I'll have a go at clipping at my nap to see if looks less like a startled hedgehog. Off to buy online tonight - need delivery by Friday.... I'm not a fan of forward planning - I just lose things. Need to buy a pair of shoes to go with the postbox too. Online shoe shopping sucks....

I just linked to this blog on another thread too here. I like that lots of these are done with hair not that long.

MonkeyingAroundTown · 16/05/2013 04:52

These are all very nice hair styles. The model has gorgeous thick hair so wouldn't work on thin hair. Plus they look really hard to do on your own hair. I really struggle too with my hair and doing new styles

I bought a couple of simple hair pieces. Incredibly simple to use and you look like you have a great updo. I for mine from hot hair at about 20 quid. They were a life saver on hols when my hair frizzed in the humidity.

bulletproofgerbil · 16/05/2013 11:47

I have some hothair hair pieces too dazzling. They give me the volume that I just can't achieve with my own meagre hair. I have a hairy scrunchy thing and a clip in thing that looks like a large flat guinea pig. They're great.

I wore my shorter than shoulder length (very fine and straight) hair in a sort of French pleat...it stayed all day and was brill and easy!

this stuff is bloody amazing. you puff it in to your hands (its a sort of powder), rub them together, and rub it into your hair and roots....its genius for giving it volume nad stickiness but without crispyness if that makes sense!

Secondly, I bought "extra strong" hair pins from asda...much tighter and harder gripping than normal ones. worked well and held my hair all day and night.

also, put your grips in well...put them in a teeny bit and then go in the opposite direction with it...holds much better!

chimchar · 16/05/2013 11:54

ellan...I love that ladys blog....her hair is ace!

Keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 16/05/2013 12:01

excuse the crappy video quality but I find this my easiest up do.
I do need a few bobby pins to keep the ends of my hair tucked in but I do have pretty long hair.
It takes seconds to do and looks quite glam I think, I always get compliments when I do it like this :-)

FlowersFlowersFlowers Thanks Vicar. That makes sense to me now. I'll give it a go.

OP I have fine, shiney hair and not much of it. explains how I wrap my hair. My hair gets too greasy to curl with a sock bun method. I use a curling iron and then wrap from the ends to the ponytail by the bobble.

I've started following Small Things on Pinterest. I have found some great ideas.

daimbardiva · 16/05/2013 17:27

The lady on the small things blog actually has naturally straight fine hair - she is just really good at using volumisinf products and styling irons etc. I've actually picked up some good tips from her - her videos are easy to follow and id never used texturising products before - they really help.

AaDB · 16/05/2013 20:54

I'll definitely have a better look then. Her hair is amazing and looks amazing thick and healthy.

Bumping for me to come back to.
