I've posted on here a few weeks ago, asking for advice and opinions about a 1950s style Boden dress (Chancery) for a friend's wedding in June.

Based on your very sensible advice, and because I didn't LOVE it, I decided not to buy it.

Having not been able to find anything I do like (why is everything above the knee and/or yellow?) I've decided to make my own. I'm not sure of colour yet - I'm buying material tomorrow, but I'm looking for mint green, blue or tangerine.

And this is where I need your advice about shoes. What are your favourites?

Thank you all in advance.

I think I may be in Frock Heaven, Mrs Lettuce

And those are great shoes, too. I'm fabric shopping tomorrow or Saturday to see what I can find and price it up. Part of me wants to have a go at making something, but there's a beautiful Lady V dress. Not mint green or blue though.

Kneedeep I'm about 5' 2" and the dress was below knee but not quite mid calf. But I wore it with an extra petticoat so that made it a bit shorter.

I was about to recommend Miss L Fire too.

witha you absolutely don't need an 18!

I bought a 16, I am probably about the same as you (although possibly more busty!) and the 16 was perfect.

That style you really like, I have that one and there is no give in the waist and the neckline is quite low. I also have a Hepburn, it has a bit of stretch (and is more comfy) and the neckline is obviously higher!

DON'T get a corset unless you are prepared to put in some serious time getting used to it. Otherwise you might find you get sweaty all day, plus I found I am quite short-waisted and the bones dug into my bottom. I still have scars!!

I have this from What Katie Did, although I would love a waist cincher, my belly is a bit erm, hangy so it looks absolutely disgusting as it's pushed out the bottom Blush. Sorry, TMI!

I wouldn't bother with stockings unless you really fancy going all-out fifties. They can be really hot, esp the fully fashioned ones.

(Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs!)

Also, just realised I never answered your question. Your natural waist would be about an inch above your belly button. Bend over sideways at your waist, where your body creases is your natural waist. Or so I was told by someone helping me make a vintage dress.

Jackie this is a revelation. My natural waist is 32"!! I did order a corset - it arrived, but it was too big (Yay! Doesn't happen often). It's amazing how differently I feel about my body shape now. But what a difference a corset (even a too big one) makes - a proper hourglass! So excited. And think there may be more options dress wise - many of the ones I liked were not in the sizes I thought I could fit into.

Now, I know this is not the same as the brief in anyway, really, but thanks to you all, I found this dress

I fell in love with it. I'm a little worried about the fit, but I'll try it and see.

And I found some gold vintage style Bertie sandals on eBay. So now all I need is a contrasting coloured cardigan.

Thank you all for all your help.

Ooh I like that!

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 21/05/2013 19:51

Yay! And now, I've stopped seeing dresses every time I close my eyes :)
