Help! Wedding on Sunday, no dress!

TimeForADrink · 13/05/2013 18:47

I posted a couple of days ago asking about a dress to match a pink Osprey clutch this is the exact colour (wrong bag), although I see it's called 'salmon pink'... giving you an indication of how shocking I am at this stuff.

People were helpful but I didn't find anything I liked. I now have a couple of hours on Wednesday afternoon to find something (wedding abroad, flying on Friday morning). Can you please help - I'd like to look very put-together and I find it difficult to do a complete outfit nicely.

It's a Jewish religious wedding so I'm guessing no vast displays of flesh, not that I like that anyway. I'm 26, size 10 with lumpy bits and shorter than average. Fairly pale skin and long hair.

Ideally I'd like a dress that would go with the bag and some comfortable shoes that are also nice (lots of dancing afterwards, no heels). I was thinking I could buy a neutral wrap?

I really don't have a clue and I'm very lost. I always see such good recommendations for other people on here! Thanks to anyone who can help.

You're a star cardamomginger!

YAY on the Pied a Terre dress!! Several people on here have bought it and raved about it, from tiny slim to an 18, tall uns and shorties. I dare say it's a pretty safe bet.

I'd go with a patterned wrap with some navy, pinky and cream tones, along the lines of the first one I linked to, things will need tying together otherwise the bag will look like a random after thought. The DP shoes should be fine but it's impossible to say by looking at colours online.

TimeForADrink · 13/05/2013 19:41

I only ever wear a hat on the beach so I'll give it a miss :)

So, Pied a Terre dress, DP shoes, pink clutch and a cream wrap. I have some cream flowers for my hair so I could use those.

The shabbat service is the day before the wedding so I was planning to wear long linen trousers and a top. I will pack a scarf to make definitely sure.

Oh, x-posted with both of you. I will do as you both suggest.

Thank you both SO much Grin I feel so much better about it... will go and buy everything tomorrow.

Ah. Not sure about the trousers.... If it's an Orthodox synagogue, trousers are a no-no.

Sorry Sad.

MrsLettuce · 13/05/2013 19:45

Heck, I'm glad you're here!

Chandon · 13/05/2013 19:58

Can you give feedback on how you like the pied a terre dress? Am contemplating it for myself but worried about sweatiness due to high polyester content....

TimeForADrink · 13/05/2013 20:08

Chandon Will definitely give feedback.

cardamom Thank you for being so helpful, just one more question please, re: trousers. They are quite loose and smart. I googled trousers in synagogues and here it mentions non-Orthodox types of tradition. The wedding website says the services will be in the "conservative-Jewish tradition". I just assumed that meant it was religious rather than cultural but does that mean the synagogue will be conservative-type therefore trousers are okay please? Otherwise I think I need to buy a long skirt in H&M as I only really wear trousers.

As you only have Wednesday to shop, I'd be temped to order 2-3 from house of fraser online tonight with next day delivery, so you'll get them wednesday morning - if none are right you've still got the afternoon to hit the shops. (and probably can return the ones you don't want to the store in the afternoon).

Just as you are on a tight time frame, you don't have to worry about your local store not having them in your size.

cardamomginger · 13/05/2013 20:21

Hmmm. There is a Conservative movement in Judaism, which is not Orthodox. I think trousers would not be usual in a synagogue setting. Of course, they may be talking conservative with a small 'c', meaning the style of the services, rather than the actual movement. In which case, trousers are still a no-no.

It's not just the clinginess or otherwise of the garment (there are skirts and dresses that are a hell of a lot more revealing of a woman's figure than trousers). It's also to do with the religious prohibition on each gender wearing clothing meant for the other. Different strands within the Jewish tradition interpret this differently. Clearly, in this day and age women do wear trousers that have been designed for them. However, the more conservative and tending towards the orthodox a community is, the less likely they will be to endorse trouser-wearing for women.

People tend to conform to stricter standards of dress when they are in a synagogue setting and attending a religious service (which is why I asked where the wedding was going to be held - more leeway if it's in a hotel) than they do in their day to day life.

If you want, you can PM me the details of the synagogue, etc and I can translate it into what they are likely to expect.

I really don't want to stress you out. And I think it is absolutely lovely that you care so much. But equally, I'd hate for you to turn up wearing something that's inappropriate and you feel like you stick out like a sore thumb and feel awkward. (DH and I once got stuck on the table of Rabbis and their wives at a bar mitzvah with me wearing something that would have been absolutely fine if only I'd been seated with their non-clerical friends. No one was snooty to me - everyone was friendly and chatty - but I felt very awkward indeed.)

soaccidentprone · 13/05/2013 20:29

With house of Fraser you can arrange to have them delivered to your local store, so you could pick the outfit up from there.

TimeForADrink · 13/05/2013 20:31

Thank you very much cardamom and for explaining why the skirts/trousers thing. I can see why although my friends seem quite relaxed to me the fact that they strictly observe everything else indicates a skirt is probably the way to go - I was thinking it was more along the lines of being a bit 'old-fashioned' (e.g. my Mum never liked me wearing jeans to church even though the vicar was fine with it) rather than something prohibited.

Don'tmind That would be a genius idea except Co-Op have just blocked my card whilst I was ordering the scarf as I couldn't remember my password Angry I have the scarf using our joint account but I think DP would freak out if I put £400-odd worth of dresses on it Grin If I can get it unblocked tomorrow I will try again and get them there for Wednesday (they guarantee it if you order before 7pm).

Oooh, am totally buying the pleated maxi, thank you! I have a great long-sleeved shirt that would go with it. mrslettuce you are also a genius!

Grin glad to help!

soaccidentprone · 13/05/2013 21:05

these shoes?

justpoppy · 14/05/2013 09:10

Chandon I have that Pied a Terre dress and its absolutely gorgeous! Its very flattering, extremely forgiving around the tummy area and generally fab. I got mine from ebay at Christmas for about £50.

TimeForADrink · 15/05/2013 22:15

Very jealous justpoppy as I paid full whack for mine this evening :) I've uploaded a picture of the full combination on my profile - my flatmate, by pure and lucky coincidence, has shoes that match my bag so I'm going to totter around in them (I really don't do heels!). She's also loaned me a perfect necklace to go with it but I'm not sure it shows up in the picture.

Thank you all very much - I am very please with my purchases and I would never have picked the dress out by myself, it looks so different on the hanger.

Chandon I will come back after the weekend and let you know how it fares on the sweaty front. I imagine a wedding at 25C and muggy will be a perfect test!

Hi,
Just wanted to mention that there might be separate seating for men and women at the synagogue on Shabbat and for the wedding ceremony as well.
Have a lovely time!

cardamomginger · 16/05/2013 23:04

You look gorgeous, BTW! Grin

justpoppy · 17/05/2013 16:29
