Can you help me look fabulous?

It's a tall order...

I have a family lunch to attend at the beginning of July and just want to look nice for a change. That sort of polished, finished look. Nothing fancy, just effortlessly chic I suppose (I know, a lot of effort needs to go in!)

I usually look just wrong and bedraggled and am really fed up. I am 5' 5, size 10 but have terrible knees! Oh and I am (whispers) 40.

Anyone up for the challenge? (hopeful)

Thank you everyone for all your advice.

oh yes I like that Zara top! good texture. I would wear my hair pulled back with it, fwiw.

I think for £100 a really great pair of navy cigarette pants is a great way to spend a chunk of the budget. For your height I would look for something that finishes on the ankle. It's a shame these are black, the twill is heavy and matte enough to be nice enough for a lunch, but hardwearing / washing enough for everyday too.

Shoes: I would look for tan, not nude, which is a bit footballers' wives / Kate Middleton. Someone posted a great pair of tan and gold leather flats on another thread and I can't find them now, driving myself mad looking! How are your feet? A summer pedicure is so nice!

umm feet are ok, and I have a month! Could spend some of my budget on a pedicure if I don't need a top.

I like those trousers, do you think ankle ending trousers can make ankles look a bit thick?

What about nails? Neutrals or a splash of colour?

I think it's shoes that make ankles look thick, not trousers, iyswim. But one of the reasons I like those ones I linked to is they're a good stright cut, not too tapered, so won't cling at the ankle, which is flattering, yy. And if you like them, then try the black! whether black is a good neutral for you will depend on your colouring (eg it can be harsh on fair blondes).

If you want to up the chic / glam ante a classic pair of courts really helps the legs but a decent pair would take your whole budget (and it's worth spending £100 - £150, I did on a pair I loved about 8 years ago, have taken care of them, they're still fab).

If you can ditch the DC (ha) ideally go and get some trousers then pop them on to try shoes on. I know, who has time for that.

Nails - as long as you avoid novelty and they're neat and shortish, I don't think you can go wrong. Nude hands are trendy at the mo. Bright pinks, reds and corals are always nice on toes, summer or winter. Though just think about the combo with your outfit - eg I would find red toes and black trousers a bit vampy, but red with navy, grey or khaki clothes is brilliant.

Sorry if I'm being well bossy, I'm supposed to be revising for exams and am finding it far nicer to direct my energy elsewhere, whole afternoon wasted on MN Blush
