Waxing - tell me the absolute truth.....

Don't know if this is the right category for this but I figured you ladies were probably veteran hair removers...
I'm a complete coward but am considering waxing for the first time. I need to know how painful it is for
a.a leg wax
and
b.bikini line
Please be honest with me - and is there anything you can do to make it hurt less.....or am I a total wimp?

do not try waxing yourself.
get an experienced person to do it
and it does hurt. gets better with time, but it still hurts

bikini line kills. but the result is worth it.

PandaG · 15/05/2006 19:40

Legs - fine, I just wince a bit

Bikini Line - hurts, but bearable, and less each time. Really worth it IMO, as regrowth I get with shaving or Immac itches really badly

Underarms - done once NEVER AGAIN !

All the above at a salon, would not be brave enough to do it myself!

Earlybird · 15/05/2006 19:55

welshmum - if tweezing eyebrows has been avoided in the past due to pain factor, you probably aren't ready for waxing. I swear by it, but it's not pleasant. I figure it's like getting an injection or going to the dentist - uncomfortable while it's being done, but worth it.

Yes, dd is just 5. She's in reception, and loves it. How is your dd? Will she start reception in September?

robinpud · 15/05/2006 20:17

blossomhill- What is the regrowth like on your upper lip? My beautician doesn't recommend it but I have a friend at work who has gone on to steroids and is devastated by the amount of facial hair she is growing. Is it something you have done every week or so? I have my legs done 1 every 3 weeks in the summer and 1 every 5 in the winter so don't know how to advise her.

LipstickMum · 15/05/2006 20:31

I used to go to the Pamela Stevens in Muswell Hill, I stopped going when we emigrated in about 1998. It was a good salon and the girl who usually waxed me was very experienced. They used hot wax there which tends to be less painful, but hotter.

Blossomhill · 17/05/2006 13:54

Robinpud - I have it done every 6-8 weeks and regrowth is slow and is about same, hasn't got thicker.

Laura032004 · 17/05/2006 15:28

Is the pain much worse when you're pg? I'm thinking of having my bikini line done for the first time soon (will be 35w pg). I don't usually find having my legs done too bad, but have never had them done whilst pg either.

robinpud · 17/05/2006 16:00

Laura -It didn't make any difference to me but don't think I bothered with the bikini line that close to my due date. finding it would be hard enough!

Laura032004 · 17/05/2006 16:03

I'm having it done at a salon, so finding it isn't my problem :o!!!

robinpud · 17/05/2006 16:12

I go to a salon too but didn't want my beautician having to get too close to the bump! It's undignified at the best of times but worse with a big bump in the way. you need to think about where you want the hair removing from if you see what I mean...

Skyler · 17/05/2006 20:21

Hi Welshie and Lippy from a fellow Junie!
I say go for it Welshie. I have put it off for years worried about the pain (and the indignity) but had my bikini line and top lip done for the first time at the end of last year (followed by IPL). I had a great beautician and yes it stung but it is momentary and well worth it for the results. Top lip was worse than bikini, but over quickly. Def get a professional to do it though!

welshmum · 17/05/2006 20:24

Hello Skyler...I've gone from gung ho back to chicken...see how I feel in a couple of days. Am a true wimp

Ah Welshie, was wondering whether you had made the appt. Make the appt and forget about the pain... it's similar to getting pg and giving birth really, you forget about the morning sickness and childbirth and just focus on the end result !
Hiya Skyler! Are you back in the UK now?? How nice to see some 'old' Junies (for old, read ante natal). I quite miss posting on a regular thread, although god knows I barely have time Sad
I am going to make an appt today for a half leg wax, I'm sure it's going to get warm and I'll get caught out looking like a yetti Wink

LipstickMum · 18/05/2006 16:38

I've got a half leg waxing appt tomorrow at 415pm, beat you to it Welshie!

Skyler · 19/05/2006 16:43

Lol Lippy. Yes back in the UK and somehow have no time for Mumsnet now despite the fact we now have broadband. I am blaming my lack of a cleaner Grin.
Come on Welshie, bite the bullet. There is no way it will be as bad as you imagine, I promise.

LipstickMum · 19/05/2006 20:17

Well Welshie, I had my legs done and my eyebrows this afternoon, just in case the sun comes out this w/e and I want to wear a skirt. How are you getting on in the hair dept.???

Twiglett · 19/05/2006 20:18

hurts a lot but manageable

hair grows back itchy and within about 2 weeks need to shave stubbly bits

get ingrown hairs too

I wouldn't do it tbh

yomellamoHelly · 19/05/2006 20:20

Tried waxing. Thought there'dbe a long-term gain for the short-lived pain (not as bad as I was expecting - had it done in a salon), but I could feel stubble by the end of the week, so haven't repeated the experience.

notasheep · 19/05/2006 20:34

Bikini line done once and never again.

BamboozlesLover · 18/06/2006 15:54
