EXPATINSCOTLAND.............................can I ask you about your hair?

I remember you saying you get it done every 6 weeks at your hairdressers.

I have sadly Grin reached the point where semi permanent colour is not covering grey effectively enough and need to take the plunge with permanent dye.

So............I would have a base colour put on, then some lowlights, but what happens with root retouching if you have lowlights?

Obviously I understand they can retouch the roots with the base colour, but how do the lowlights work? I don't want lowlights redone all over the head each time as my hair would end up like straw.

I always dye my own hair, high maintenance getting it done at the hairdressers every couple of months, you can get the l'Oreal highlighting kit, get a friend to help tho, my sister did mine last year and it was nice, now I just use a semi permanent dye every few months to keep the greys at bay Grin

I know .....it's pricey Sad, but I think I need the professionals now Grin. Have been doing a semi permanent on my hair at home for a couple of years now.

I have a mix of highlights AND lowlights and no 'base colour'. I have just my natural colour.

She blends in the grey w/high and low lights.

It's about 40-50% grey.

I have the hair cut every six weeks, but the colour done every other month b/c it does dry it out and my hair is 'mature' = dry.

I go to a local hairdresser and she only charges £50 for a whole head of high/lowlights AND cut.

aha - so you don't bother with a base colour and go for just the highlights and lowlights - sounds like a good idea.

What I've realised is that I don't have loads of grey, but the patches where it is (eg at parting) are really prominent now.

no, my hair would be like straw if we attempted to dye it and then put high/low lights on top.

as it is, when i first starting going in, i had SO much build up of cheap dye my hair was rough as tree bark.

i use aveda colour conserve shampoo and conditioner and a deep conditioner at least once a week.

tillykins · 14/05/2006 18:03

thank goodness I am blonde - takes longer for the grey to show!

expatinscotland · 14/05/2006 18:04

i have very dark hair, so it shows up right away.

I think this is what has happened to my hair Expat, despite buying the most expensive colour on the shelves at Boots, my hair has suffered.

On the day I wash it (I use redken) my hair is lovely and soft, but a day later the ends are v dry.

Tillykins - yes, I think grey blends in to natural blond far more easily!
