To the experts on jeans ....

I am size 8. 5 foot 4. Slim/athletic. Age 44.

Because I am an 8 it means my waist and hips are small.

Because I am 5 foot 4 I don't want petite or long.

Because I am athletic my thighs and calves are on the larger side so that's where the fabric needs to be.

Just because I am 44 doesn't mean I want to look my Granny (especially seeing as she would have been 100 this week if she hadn't died 2 years ago). It's ok - she would appreciate the humour.

Why can't I find any bloody jeans that actually fit?

If they fit my thighs and calves then I have about 5 inches too much around my hips and waist.

If I wear children's jeans they fit my waist and hips but my thighs and calves bulge and look awful. That's if I can pull them up over my thighs at all.

I can wear children's leggings and jeggings as they have enough stretch but not the jeans.

Help, Mumsnet, help.

Thing is, I don't think the OP and I have curvy hips...just chunky legs :) so that's not really hour glass is it?

I thought OP said her waist was small in proportion to her thighs which is curvy in my book.

I'm not the same shape at all though. As have no waist at all.

Ogooglebar · 11/04/2013 18:53

Hmm I don't know..I can only speak for myself, but although my measurements might sound like I'm curvy - 25in waist v 35in hips - my hips have only a very gentle curve to them, which makes my shape more athletic looking and 'straight' than hour glass. But still causes problems with stuff fitting on the waist.

No I wouldn't describe myself as curvy. I have a very small waist but it is not defined as my torso is very slim. I wear a 28 inch band bra, for example. My abdominal muscles are visible as they are very toned.

Before I had children I would have described myself as boy-shaped. My hips only really appeared after childbirth! Definitely not hourglass either.

I think of Holly Willoughby or Kelly Brook as curvy or hourglass.

Oh I never realised that torso/rib size must play a big part in how defined your waist looks. I wear a 28 bra too OP, maybe that's why I don't look curvy.

MrsCampbellBlack · 11/04/2013 19:46

ok perhaps curvy is the wrong word but 10 inches between waist and hip is a reasonable difference - I am much more straight up and down.

Which means I will find it easier to find jeans but dresses unless shift shape are a nightmare - I can't do anything belted or look like a sack of potatoes.

But the v shaped cut out in the back helps when you have a small waist in comparison to your hips - the levi curve jeans come in different types from slight curve to more dramatic curve.

Hourglass to me means same boob size as hips with a small waist - my boobs and hips are similar size but I don't really do in much at the middle so am more apple shaped.
