Urgent help needed - I've aged!

chocolateshoes · 11/04/2013 15:39

I really don't know what has happened but all of a sudden my face has aged. I've got lines everywhere, crazy eyebrows and a bit of a tache. My skin looks red and dry. Have just rung local beauticians for eyebrow wax but there's no answer - so hopeful I'll get booked in soon. What else can I do? Can anyone recommend a good moisturiser that won't break the bank? Any other tips? Have got to stop the rot!!!

Yes...that's the avon eye cream. Not so much a faff but I always have loads of gel after the cream's gone. Downside? You have to stick your digits in it.

It's on offer now for a tenner, I think. Online Avon.

My under eyes have developed loads of wrinkles in the last couple of weeks. They have just, well, gone all crepey. Suddenly too.

Weird.

I am trying to be all French about it and accept it as womanly. I am a bit mystified as they just seem to all have come at once. Leaning forward looking in the mirror is even scarier.

I saw a picture of Angelina Jolie with exactly the same thing yesterday and she looks none the worse for it. Graceful actually. We are the same age so maybe this is what happens naturally when you are in your late thirties and don't mess around with fillers.

I have decided as a consequence that all things chic are the way forward. I am middle aged and that is now fine with me.

higgle · 12/04/2013 14:30

The recent weather has done no favours to anyone's skin. I always find it miserable looking in the mirror if it is very cold and the humidity is low.
Whilst I feeel about 106 at themoment I'm hoping that the usual return to lusciousness will come with a wet spring. Burt's Bees skin cream works well for me.

chocolateshoes · 12/04/2013 14:57

I find it really hard to match my skin colour when choosing foundation or tinted moisturiser which is why I rarely buy or use it. But I'll have to take the plunge I think. I'm going for my eye-brow wax later so will ask the therapist about tache threading and see what she says. Have always bleached but it seems to be less effective.

My skin felt and looked better this morning and I think it was because I actually spent some time on it last night. Something I never manage to do. I'm going to try to have a much better skin care routine.

Practicality - its exactly that - loads of lines all appeared overnight!

Best thing for ageing skin is Retin A cream, it's the only thing that has softened my 11's .
Research it first before you slap it on , too much and your face will redden and peel , but lovely sin will be revealed underneath

Also a glycolic serum/cream helps to exfoliate ,hyaluronic acid serum helps build collagen. I got mine from Bravura.

Eliza22 · 12/04/2013 16:12

ggirl. Go on, go on, go on! Tell us your Retin A supplier? Please?

NotTreadingGrapes · 12/04/2013 16:24

oh ggirl! One of my beauty gurus! (it's me Bucharest!)

What should we buy from Bravura then apart from the GA peel? So many serums/creams. IIRC you are about my age so tell me exactly what I need to add to the Aldi/Avon/Estee Lauder bulk buying I am already planning!

MacaYoniAndCheese · 12/04/2013 16:31

YY to Retin-A. I luffs it. Always begin with the gentlest one, as if you use the wrong type it can be very irritating. I also really like jojoba oil for my oily-aging skin. It feels rich and luxurious but balances everything and I haven't had a single breakout since using it. It also balances out any redness or irritated areas.

coreny · 12/04/2013 16:49

Angelina Jolie will be interesting lady to watch...will she or won't she have stuff 'done.'
She has excellent bone structure though.

ggirl · 12/04/2013 17:49

NotTreadingGrapes bucharest !!! long time no see.

I got my first tube of Retin A from dodgy site in Belfast called angelblu.com , but recently have had a friend bring me some back from Dubai. Think you can buy online from amazon. I use 0.5%.I use it under my eyes , on my 11's and the rest of my face avoiding around my mouth cos it makes that area peel .Only a pea size for the whole face. Be sure to wash your face atleast 20 mins before applying Retin A to allow your skin to go back to normal ph level, this helps avoid the skin reacting.

hyaluronic serum

glycolic gel

am going to order this as have run out of night time moisturiser

knackeredmother · 13/04/2013 18:54

I tried the sudocrem mask, left it on about an hour, it really worked. Can really sympathise, I aged loads after having kids (I'm 37 look 50). I'm going for Botox and fillers when I've stopped breastfeeding.

Eliza22 · 13/04/2013 21:18

What do you mean? "look 50" ? I've seen girls in their late 20's who smoke and have overdone it, on the sun beds who lock knackered. I'm 50 and a lot of the time I look good!

Age really is a number. I was out recently on a "do" and I was the eldest there. The age range was 30 ish to 40+. Again, I got the "You don't look 50!!" WHAT IS 50 SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE?

knackeredmother · 13/04/2013 21:29

Ha! What I meant is I look a lot older than I am!

Corygal · 13/04/2013 22:22

To be honest, you need to sort out (all the) hair on your head before you start on your skin. Change your hair colour to something less harsh, poss lighter, and closer to your childhood shade - this replaces the light to the face that skin loses with age (it mattifies).

Then wax your eyebrows and dye them - the shaping lifts the brow to where it was in yr 20s and the dye replaces the colour that fades with age.

Get tash and chin hair removed - more of it grows in your 40s.

Once you've done that, you'll know what you look like. Get a make up lady from a good brand (not a yoof one) to do you free and tour the stands until you find a look you like.

coreny · 13/04/2013 22:25

yes agree with sorting out your hair

no more pony tails.

Get a really good cut and colour.

piratecat · 13/04/2013 22:53

i use this from Clarins, i love it. exfoliator.

here

my skin is very dry, the winter hasn't helped this yr. am 44. last 3 yrs my skin has got worse. MOre wrinkles, larger pores, looser. I like Clarins foundation, that's my only makeup indulgence. I also use garnier bb cream, the medium one. really gives me a fresher look. I tried the one for sensitive skin and it was rubbish, settled in the cracks!!

coreny · 13/04/2013 22:57

i have that exfoliator - i find it a tad harsh. Just a tad tho'

LittleAbruzzenBear · 14/04/2013 10:11

How long do you leave the sudocrem on for?

chocolateshoes · 14/04/2013 10:23

think I'll try the Sudocrem mask this evening - but not overnight, just for an hour. My hair colour is fine, and having my brows done last Friday has improved things already. I', waiting for my delivery of products to come next week. Have booked hair cut for next week so will also go into Boots and be brave and try out the foundations. Eek!

My beauty therapist said that wearing sunscreen everyday is really important so I use Clinique City Block religiously (it acts as a great primer under make up too).

Boots Protect and Perfect eye cream is very good. I've used it for about three months now and the skin under my eyes is very smooth.

A poster up thread mentioned the aspirin facial - it is AMAZING. Take six aspirin, add a few drops of water to soften them and then mush them up into a paste. I add a teaspoon of honey to the mixture, slather it on my face and leave for ten minutes before washing off. My skin is glowing afterwards. The first time I did it I went into work the next day and three of my colleagues commented on how good my skin looked so I would definitely recommend it SmileAdded bonus being that it costs pennies so well worth a try.

LittleAbruzzenBear · 14/04/2013 11:41

Some fab tips on here.

coreny · 14/04/2013 12:18

I've tried putting sudocream on my forehead overnight. My skin isn't plumped, in fact it looks quite dry but my pores are smaller and my lines are definitely reduced. I'm definitely doing that again.

piratecat · 14/04/2013 12:33

ikwym about the exfoliator. i use a small amount and only every other day. I had a look and they do a cleanser of the same smell (it's gorg) i might try that when this runs out.

McGilly · 14/04/2013 12:37

I am in a similar situation. I have seen friends achieve remarkable results by giving up sugar, alcohol, caffeine and wheat. But I'm not that desperate. I think a bit of pampering, good make up, really good hair and a wardrobe detox should do the trick. Eyebrows are critical.

McGilly · 14/04/2013 12:39

I also really like the Aldi skincare. Experiment with foundations but the lighter, the better. Look for foundations that offer a "glow" - Loreal, Maybelline, max factor all good and this week I am using a m&s limited editions tinted moisturiser which is seriously impressive.
