to ask about your work attire?

Inspired by another thread, where do you shop for workwear? How much do you spend on an outfit (if not too cheeky!)? What environment do you work in and what do you wear?
Struggling with my own workwear, you see!

As you tend to wear dresses, I shouldn't see a problem as long as they aren't overly...summer glitzy and more suitable to a festival.

Some great answers here thanks with places I hadn't thought of Smile

£100 for a skirt that lasts 6-7 years isn't bad at all, I'd rather pay that amount than buy a £30 skirt every 9 months or so. Also never thought of ebay at all!

I think maxi dresses are ok for teaching secondary. The only reason I don't wear them in my primary school is because I'd probably trip over them when I have to run to small children, and I'm constantly kneeling down so they'd get dirty on the floor.

lljkk · 05/04/2013 20:42

Would it be weird if I asked in the Style+Beauty pictures section for folk to post pix of themselves in work attire (sans head to preserve privacy where wanted)?

I think I need inspiration and words aren't enough for me to see what you all mean.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 05/04/2013 20:52

I'm up for that lljkk Smile

I work in the city. Usually wear dresses with jackets. Current favourites are Austin Reed, LK Bennett, damsel in a dress, banana republic and John lewis collection. Some old favourites are Hobbs, fenn wright Manson but they have had a couple of poor seasons. Occasionally have Armani collezioni as well.

I occasionally wear trouser suits and new favourite is Austin reed but old favourites are Zara (they have lasted years!), banana republic and Ann Taylor. Blouses from Thomas Pink.

I adore accessories and spend a lot of time and effort (and cash!) on bags, shoes and jewelry as they really finish an outfit and can make or break it.

No actual pics but I have a work wear Pinterest boardGrin and the bling board goes with it Grin

I work at home, in our company offices overseas, on customer sites (hospitals) and at conferences. Obv my attire varies hugely - if I'm teaching on site then a Wallis dress or a knee length skirt and a top works, in the office I often wear a wool dress (cold climate) or maxi skirt, and conferences its shift dress or trouser suit. I also have to have 'not working but with colleagues/customers' clothes.

I do a lot of ebay shopping, and cycle clothes through there - Hobbs, Next, Bravissimo, Monsoon, Oasis, Wallis, Warehouse. Really whatever appeals tbh.

slug · 05/04/2013 20:56

I have an odd job where I can be crawling under desks one minute and presenting to conferences the next.

My basic work wardrobe is based around Uniqulo T shirts and these knee length skirts with opaques and boots. I have two very expensive dresses (bought on sale) from a German designer Rundholz. They are a balloon shape, quirky and incredibly comfortable. I also have a couple of tunic/coats which I use for warmth and variety. I also have dresses from Phase Eight, Betty Jackson Black and Wallis.

I have 4 criteria for buying work dresses. The should:
Have sleeves
Have pockets
Not need ironing
Be on sale

If the dress has 3 of the 4 I will buy it.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 05/04/2013 20:58

C'mon novice can't I twist your arm to post some headless pics next week?

Somethingtothinkabout · 05/04/2013 21:03

I might be up for it MissBeehiving, I'd do it tonight, but I'm already in my PJs!

BrandyAlexander · 05/04/2013 21:15

Not that you would know it but I am definitely the shy retiring type!Wink I live in fear of someone tapping me on the shoulder in rl and saying 'hello novice' because they've recognised me.Blush

BestIsWest · 05/04/2013 21:15

I wear dresses/cardigans with black opaques and black patents or trousers with wrap style or cowl necked top and cardigans. I tend to stick to a l grey/black/navy palette with a bit of white. M&S or Debenhams mainly. I quite like Betty Jackson Black. Kaliko online sales are good for tops.

Absolutely begrudge paying full price for clothes so tend to comb the sales.

shepherdsdelight · 05/04/2013 21:17

I am a publican. I wear black trousers or skirts from sainsburys, next, m and s, and anywhere else cheap. Tops I generally spend about £25 on - eg East (sale prices). I love dresses too - jersey wrap type ones for about £40. I also browse charity shops and 2nd hand agencies for better quality brands.

MisterUdagawa · 05/04/2013 21:17

Gap or BR for trousers.
Knitwear from boden or marks.
Shirts uniqlo or boden.

Tbh for your average smart casual workplace boden is good. Grr

Summer is quite different.

MisterUdagawa · 05/04/2013 21:19

Pencil skirts Zara.
I'm
Secondary.

ivanapoo · 05/04/2013 21:23

I work in an office and have three looks:

Blouse with tapered/slim leg trousers and heels

Long line silk or cotton top with dark skinny jeans, boots and drapey cardi or blazer

Fitted tulip skirt dress with leggings/tights and heels

90% are navy, taupe, white or black - boring but practical and easy to accessorise.

Most clothes from Zara, Whistles, Reiss, All Saints - often 2nd hand. H&M too.

paintyourbox · 05/04/2013 21:25

Lecturer/locum pharmacist.

On patient contact days its professional dress, I wear a lot of tailored dresses with suit jackets. I'm not allowed many accessories- a watch, one small pair or studs and one band ring. Shoes have to be black.

On teaching days we can wear anything we like. I go a little more laid back with wrap dresses, wool trousers with a white shirt.

I shop at Banana Republic, Per Una and Next mainly for work stuff.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 05/04/2013 21:25

Yay for Something Smile

Maybe we could assemble on a picture thread on Monday?

Are you up for being headless Mister?

BrandyAlexander · 05/04/2013 21:32

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/04/2013 21:52

No to pictures - I look much better in my descriptions than I ever do irl. :)

ifancyashandy · 05/04/2013 21:57

Work in media.

Today I wore leather leggings (Reiss), a black and white spotty silk shirt (Zara) and a black blazer (Jaeger) with black ankle boots.

Tend to shop in Zara, ASOS, Massimo Duti, Vivienne Westwood, Hugo Boss, Paige and 7 for all Mankind (both for jeans), Whistles, Jaeger Boutique, Reiss, Mango, French Connection, Cos.

Spend up to £150 on a dress, skirt, trousers or jacket. About the same for shoes. £70 odd on a blouse, jumper. Jeans up to £200 (I wear them a lot for work and non work).

lljkk · 06/04/2013 09:25

Can always name change, Remus.
If no one else gets it going I will start a thread of work clothes later, starting with my interview outfit (mediocre, probably, but I'm convinced the job went well so adequate!).
