At what age is long hair a no no in your book?

My hair has always been long with a couple of ill htought out exceptions in my youth. Now its getting pretty awful long, bad condition no matter what I try, and its just not got the same body since I had DD 2 years ago. Its got to go I've decided. Am deciding on what to do with it now.

Was surprised when my freind said she thinks its unseemly for older women to have long hair as it makes them look like they are trying to be a teenager still. What do you think? Is long hair an equvalent of mutton dressed as lamb?

I didn't used to think this but now I do. I cut mine off when I got to 42 and feel loads better for it. I look younger, hair's in fab condition, clothes look better (in my opinion Blush)
Go for it - bet you'll look great.

I think long hair can be lovely on an older lady (ahem) if it's in beautiful condition. Otherwise I'd definitely chop. Condition usually deteoriates with age which is why you see so few older women with long hair (which isn't permanently in a bun).
There was an ad campaign the other year I think for Gap which had an elderly lady (80's?) with amazing long white hair.
I cut my long hair last year but although I miss it I doubt I'll grow it back unless I can get it to shine again - I've got grey hairs which are really straggly and wiry (yes, I really need to go to the hairdressers).

How interesting, i had my hair cut shorter than ever a while ago (always had long curly hair, now have again!) and boyf had a funny freak out saying it made me look older. we have both recently turned 30 & he admitted later it was just a result of his own paranoias about getting old! Grin so i think i'll keep it long for a while yet.....

bundle · 11/05/2006 15:27

have had all my hair cut off a few times and it's long at the moment..so it's only a matter of time Smilenot sure I like long, grey hair (mine is coloured as I've had a lot of grey for a long time)

bourneville · 11/05/2006 15:28

i've never thought much about older women with long hair but i have to admit long grey/white hair always looks v odd to me.

cupcakes · 11/05/2006 15:28

long grey hair doesn't sound so great but my mum has really shiny, white hair so I'm hoping for that (eventually).

welshmum · 11/05/2006 15:29

It looks quite sweet in Westerns - when the old ladies have got their white broderie anglaise night dresses on and their hair is in a plait all ready for bed....other than that a bit witchy witch

cupcakes · 11/05/2006 15:29

I suppose if it's not in beautiful condition and trimmed regularly you might look like a witch.

cupcakes · 11/05/2006 15:30

Grin witchy witch

sharklet · 11/05/2006 15:31

Funny one isn't it. I'm only 32 so don't consider myself old yet. But I do think had it not been for its condition going tits up after DD was born I'd have kept it long. Am trying to see the positive in this an hope it will make me look like some bright young thing and suit me. DH doesn't help - bewailing how wonderful my long hair is - but it isn't its all straggly and split endsy and awful....

Don't say 40 fgs!!

desperateSCOUSEwife · 11/05/2006 15:37

depends on the cut and the condition of hair tbh

long hair on a young person can look awful too

SaintGeorge · 11/05/2006 16:55

How many witches do you know cupcakes?

I can assure you all the ones I know have bloody gorgeous hair.

PeachyClair · 11/05/2006 17:01

Agreed Saint George- especially the men with long hair Envy

eefs · 11/05/2006 17:02

once in good condition, it's acceptable at all ages. depends on the cut and shape of face I think.

Tortington · 11/05/2006 17:07

I'm not so sure about white hair below the shoulders but other than that, long/mid length hair can look great on any age.

SaintGeorge · 11/05/2006 17:30

I am 39. I have bum length hair. It is in fairly good condition but is due for a trim to minimise split ends.

Oh - and I am a witch, hence my getting pissed off with the bad long hair/witchy witch comments.

Amiable · 11/05/2006 17:35

When I lived in South East London about 10 years ago there was a woman who travelled on the same train as me who had gorgeous long grey hair (well past her shoulders). At a guess I would say she was only in her early 40's, and her hair was lovely - thick and obviously very well cared for. I also loved the Gap advert with the older woman with long grey/white hair and thought she was stunning. I would love to have hair like that when I am older, but TOTALLY agree it's the condition that matters - long straggly, thin and wispy hair does not look good on anyone.

shellybelly · 11/05/2006 17:46

I've always had long hair and then 4mths ago i decided i needed a change, i've now got a lovely sleek bob Grin tho it does take more looking after ie i have to style it every other day and now use hairdryer/straightners whereas before i let it dry naturally and always had the option of a ponytail, now i can use a butterfly clit to keep it out of my face

shellybelly · 11/05/2006 17:47

Blush CLIP that should read CLIP Blush

SaintGeorge · 11/05/2006 17:49

I had to snort at that one shelly. Just trying to picture the male butterfly trying to find something that small Grin

shellybelly · 11/05/2006 17:51

I need eyes in the back of my head, dd is wreaking havoc, think i should start bedtime and head back later Grin oh and another Blush
