'You look really good!'

For your age....

I get this quite a lot. I'm 42 this year and I just find this profoundly sigh making. No longer do I simply 'look good' ... it's always ' you look good/ your skin is really good ....' followed by ' for your age '

At work this week I got ' I'd never have thought you were that old ' and ' Well, you dress in a young way considering you're over 40 '

I'm very sensitive about my age < obviously> Would you just take this as a compliment? Or mourn the days when a compliment wasn't immediately followed by ' for your age ...? '

I still get asked for ID and I turned 30 this earlier this year.

I don't think that's what badspeller was wanting to hear...

It's a compliment - they don't have to say anything nice about you at all or comment on how you look. But someone makes the effort to say that you look good so you should be pleased!

I think people say 'for your age' becuase there's the assumption that everyone looks good when they're young/20's, and people let themselves go as they get older, so basically if you look nice when you're over 30 then it's surprising

I'd take it as a compliment.

The "I'd never have thought you were that old" would particularly grind my gears though for some reason.

At the moment I get "wow - you don't look your age" quite a lot, which is a much politer way of putting it.

Might not be what anyone wants to hear but I wish I did look my age it's very embarrassing trying to buy a bottle of wine and being eyed suspiciously by every cashier in town! I may think otherwise though as I get older......

It is a compliment. Funny how the older one gets the less "old" ages are! I remember when people who were 30 seemed old to me (as a teenager) - how things change!

I can clearly remember aged 21 saying to a woman who i worked with ' Will you have to have specialist ante natal care during your pregnancy, what with you being an older mum?

She was 32.

Trust me, it's worse when people think you are older than you are every single time. It started when I was about 6 and was entertaining until I hit about 25. Now it's just depressing.

Bad - my DM did get specialist antenatal care when she had me, as an older mum of 31. Was a while ago though!

Yes, i know it could be worse. I think it's linked in to the whole depression about growing old. I dress nicely, wear nice make up, have a beauty regime that involves christ knows how many expensive lotions and potions but deep down I know that you can't hold back the years forever.

I'm 40 on Friday and keep getting 'no way, really ???' which does help me feel better about the whole thing .
