Teeth whitening - is it possible to DIY?

I've longed to lose the yellow staining on the old goofers for ages but can't really afford having it done professionally and I've always thought the home kits don't really work.
Has anyone had any experience with either - good or bad?

It's not exactly what you're looking for but Colgate Max White One toothpaste is really effective. I had really badly stained teeth and now the stains have almost disappeared. It's only really round the edges of my teeth that you can still see a little staining. The shade of my teeth has definitely got lighter and closer to white as well.

Yes, Crest whitestrips. Search on here - loads of recommendations for them. They work a treat.

Scottishtanguera · 24/03/2013 19:46

Got excited about the Whitestrips but I have a crown on either side of my front teeth- is it true they won't have any effect on them?
Might have to go with the toothpaste....

Crest white strips are great...doubt if they work with crowns though. Also, they sometimes hurt like hell but the result is probably worth it.

daisydoodoo · 24/03/2013 20:55

Ive used the Hollywood smile kit. It worked not brilliant white but an obvious improvement. I don't have any crowns though.

bunnymother · 24/03/2013 20:58

I don't have crowns either, but the Crest ones are amazing. No pain for me, but immediate improvement on my chompers. Maybe Google to see what people who have crowns and use Crest say. I bought mine from the US on eBay: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200610637625?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Don't know the answer!but goofers what a stoatin word
I must steal it and use as appropriate

Scottishtanguera · 24/03/2013 23:13

GrinAt scottishmummy - stoatin! Haven't heard that for ages, must use it to confuse people (don't live in Scotland anymore)

Darn it, googling has discovered they will have no effect on crowns...

I got the home one from the dentist. I had moulds made and then was given syringes of bleach to use at home.

Results were amazing and you can top up when u like.
But hurt like a bastard, the pain was immense

Cost £150 but worth it IMHO

GranToAirMissiles · 24/03/2013 23:19

After normal brushing, use bicarb soda on an electric toothbrush. Works for me.

BassDownLow · 25/03/2013 11:45

I'd look for group on deals on professional whitening - not the zoom laser one, but the one where they make a set of denture thingies and you bleach at home for a couple of weeks.

The upkeep is cheap after the initial pay out (I got a group on deal for £79) - you keep the denture thingies (cant remember name for them - vocab fail) and buy the bleach every few months.

Crest strips didnt work for me.

NonnaMai · 25/03/2013 13:40

I'm on day 5 of a 14 day course of the Crest strips and I'm really, really pleased with the result.
My dentist charges £250 for whitening. I decided to give the Crest strips a go first having seen good reviews on here.

So glad I did, I paid £31 for them which is a massive saving for the same result.
