How do you buy clothes on E Bay

I never see anything worth buying yet loads of people rave about the fab things they find on e bay, especially designer clothes. So how do they do it? Do you just get lucky or are there specific sellers you go to?

A lot of the time i just type in my favourite shops and my size and see what comes up, So id type ted baker then the size (remember though ted baker and a few others use different sizing so 2/3/4 so could be ted baker sz 3 which would be a 12) am i over complicating this now??

Other times i just look at soemthing i like then look at the sellers other items, its also a good place to look for cheaper things that are in the shops, ive just got a river island bag in the shop for £40, i paid £21 with delivery and its in perfect condition!

I just type in size 10 or aged 11 and refine it to ending soonest, then bid, I put in my max bid and if I win, I win if I don't then I don't Smile

I search by designer and size - also by thing i'm looking for e.g cashmere.
I use a snipe software program to place the max bid. I also review completed listings to get a feel for the likely price if its a popular item.

Size, item wanted, ending soonest, then trawl through.

And always look at the seller's other items. I've had some real bargains that way. Whilst searching for a blue linen skirt I found some unworn Unisa shoes tht had cost just under £100 described as "navy blue heels" which I got for £2. I've also had a Marilyn Moore hand knitted fairisle cardigan, which must have been ££££s unworn for about a fiver - again the name wasn't in the listing.

Thanks, I'm off to try my luck. I'll report back later...

You need to pick a brand you know you like, then search under your size, often. If you watch a lot of stuff you get to know how much things tend to go for. Buying things in brands you're familiar means you know particular sizes and styles will fit you. It's good fun. And if you don't like something you can just relist it. Or wear it a few times and rehash your wardrobe on an ongoing basis!

I seem to spend hours just browsing !!

JennySense · 24/03/2013 19:04

Me too! Today I grabbed an amazing coat for £15 though - fingers crossed its as lovely in real life!

BillStickersIsInnocent · 24/03/2013 19:24

I shop for things that are on my list but aren't really urgent and I know will fit.

I have saved searches set up and check regularly. These are brand + item or brand + size or all three. If something comes up I bid once and then walk away. I've 'won' some lovely things for peanuts.

VitoCorleone · 24/03/2013 20:05

I tend to just type in my size and see what comes up.

Or, for example "dress, 8" or "skinny jeans 8" if i want to look ar dresses or jeans or whatever in my size

LehmanSisters · 24/03/2013 20:22

I keep my eye out in shops for styles and things that I like, I try them on in store to get a good feel for what size I am in different shops and which styles suit me best. Then when I am on eBay I know that if I see a fitted dress from New Look I'd need to be bidding on a size x, or if I was looking at a dress from Next then I'd need to be bidding on a size z.

Often I'll see something on eBay that I can remember trying on instore months ago and remember that I had really liked it, then I'll bid on it.

Because shops often bring basically the same clothes out year after year, having tried a few on instore I then look on eBay for someone selling last years version eg. in Dorothy Perkins, they have a cut of dress that really suits me and they tend to bring it out in a different colour/pattern each year, I search for 'dorothy perkins, size x dress' and then scroll through until I find what I'm after.

Mostly I only look if there is something I want, say a new jacket or some going out tops. I go through searching for my size and the item name (eg, jacket) and go through one at a time the shops I know I like the styles in. I tend to only stick to the shops I know because I have a good feeling for what size the cut will be and what quality it will be, you get fewer surprises that way.

Thanks, lots of really good tips here. I've been having a look and seen some nice stuff, there was a lovely leather Zara jacket from last year that I had my eye on but I got distracted, it went quite cheap as well.
