Hats & fascinators, yay or nay?

I'm going to a family wedding at the end of June, wearing a 50's style with petticoat blue silk dress. The wedding will be vaguely in that theme (hints of vintage and 50's, but not full on themed). I'm contemplating a small fascinator or hat, but I don't know if its too much, or where to look.

Would you, have you worn one to a summer wedding? Any suggestions that aren't tacky or fancy dressy?

Fascinators are naff.

Hats are cool.

For a 50's look I would go for a hat or a hair flower.

Hat yes, fascinator no, they are a bit naff really. Too 'race day' for my liking. I second the idea of a flower in your hair though.

For summer weddings, I get a proper French pleat or beehive done and stick a nice big silk flower in the back. Sainsburys do surprisingly good quality ones in the summer; for one wedding, I bought five big dusty-pink roses, put my hair in a big high sock bun, and pinned all the flowers round the outside of it. Was very 60s!

If you want a fascinator, you can often find some nice little vintage cocktail hats on eBay that won't flatten your hair/give you hat band, but are a bit nicer than a headband with a 'jaunty' sisal Minnie Mouse bow glommed on.
