Help me find a long lasting foundation!!

lizzywig · 17/03/2013 06:50

Whatever I buy never seems to last longer than 5 hours. I have a wedding coming up and would like it to last from midday - midnight. I currently wear rimmel which is hopeless but does the fair shade i need - I have very fair skin!

Any recommendations? Overall budget for foundation and any settling powder is £15 (blown my budget on the outfit) but would pay £20 if really good!

TIA

Western Lauder double wear foundation really really is the best you'll get. It gives a very long lasting natural finish and it doesn't require powder on top or concealer. It is incredible!
I did a 14 he shift last week and my foundation still looked as though I'd just put it on!
Unfortunately it is £27 :( but lasts ages. As its just for a wedding, try asking for a sample.. You'll get just enough for the day ;)

Estée Lauder not western! Auto correct making me look silly once again!

BillStickersIsInnocent · 17/03/2013 07:42

Yes Estée Lauder brilliant. I use double wear light after a recommendation on here and it's fab.

SavoyCabbage · 17/03/2013 07:51

I've got l'oriel infallible and its very long lasting.

Try the no.7 intelligent foundation. They do Very Fair which is perfect for my skin. I find it a little powdery so need to apply it with a brush, which sorts that out, but it's the only foundation I have found that matches my skin (not tried v expensive makes yet though). If you ask for a sample, No.7 are fab at giving decent amounts so you can try it for 2-3 days, especially if you ask for that much so you can get a true picture of how it feels and sits, whether it is long lasting enough.

Also, you mightbwant to think about using a primer. I never ever used to do this and scoffed at the thought of priming skin like wood before painting, but now I use a primer which softens fine lines and it works well. Again, it's no.7 so maybe able to get a better one, wasn't prepared to spend a fortune before deciding if I would use it often, but it works brilliantly with the no.7 intelligent foundation. again you can get a sample from the counter that will last a few days.

I dont't need setting powder with the intelligent foundation, which is about £13-15? Can't remember exactly but no more than that.

Oh, and if you want to try more expensive ones like Estée Lauder take a look online, sometimes you can get deals from online sites to reduce the cost slightly

PavlovtheCat · 17/03/2013 08:00

(Am off to a counter to get a sample of Estée Lauder myself Grin)

i use double wear. i wear it every day but use it differently i.e normally i apply it with my fingers and use sparingly. when 'making an effort' i use a foundation brush (i prefer a stippling brush) and build up coverage to get a flawless finish. i have never used a foundation that lasts like dw.

i also use estee lauder softwash and only ever buy when they are running a gift time promotion - usually buy two products and get free gift. you can check their website to see which stores have promotions.

Another vote for double wear. I bought double wear light on mumsnet's recommendation and it is much better than my previous Mac foundation.

I've got a little sample of double wear to try now (not light) as I felt like I needed a bit more coverage (I get spotty!). The samples last about ten days.

Revlon Colorstay in Ivory (look closely, two different formulations, one for Dry and one for Oily skin). I have porcelain fair skin and always come back to this one. On me, 12 h+ wearing time and doesn't melt in hot climate. All longwearing foundations can be drying and accentuate dry skin - need to moisturize well after using. EL good too but they may have discontinued some of the palest shades.

FrugalFashionista · 17/03/2013 13:04

Oh and at £12.49, within budget Wink

ClaudiaCutie · 18/03/2013 11:55

Before coughing up any dosh, get a sample of the EL (over-rated and aging on me, and the lightest shade is still very orange).

Whilst you're in the department store, grab a sample of the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Even Finish foundation as well (they have much better shades that EL, it is superior wearing and diguises pores & lines). My current HG.

Otherwise, for a pale skin, you might want to try Clarins Everlast (good for pale). Sheiseido have a good range of pales, look on Makeupalley for ratings of those.

On the cheaper end of the scale, Borjois Heathy Mix has a good range of shades, and the Revlon Colourstay goes quite pale, and it vastly superior to the hardface aging orange of ELDW.

If you're still stuck, have a look at the Lisa Eldridge video for pale skin foundations, and Hello Dollface blog covers the products for pale skins.

My vote is to spend your money on supporting products, if you're happy with your foundation.

Make sure you moisturise so your foundation has something to grip on to. Not too much and leave it for five minutes. Then you need primer. Primer will last forever as you only need a little dib dab. Put the foundation on and then dust with powder.

This is only for the odd occasion, but if you know you're going to be dancing and possibly sweating your makeup off, spray a little hairspray on your face with your arm fully extended.

lizzywig · 18/03/2013 20:23

Ooooh thank you so much ladies!

I must confess that I've never heard of primer Confused that's going on the list! I think I'll be busy collecting samples at the weekend to give it them a try first. I definitely need something new for the long term and not just or this wedding. You've all given me a good starting point and lots to think about!

You must get primer! Think of it as smoothing face glue.

This Smashbox one is widely known to be the nuts. I'd get a mini size to try and because it lasts forever - www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B007I005CS/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1363639068&sr=8-7&pi=SL75

BinksToEnlightenment · 18/03/2013 20:43

Obviously not that one though because the shipping costs are silly!

2BodlyGo · 18/03/2013 20:45

The first time I ever heard of primer I laughed at the thought of it! Now I use it under a little illuminating serum of some kind and it makes my skin look fabulous. I went into Boots the other day to buy something (concealer I think) and the woman said 'you don't have any make-up on?' 'no' 'wow! your skin is amazing!' then I realised I did have make-up on, just not foundation! And I was [shocked] as I am 35 and never in my life considered I had good skin and more than that, it feels older than it ever has due to sleep deprivation and eating badly!

I think that what helps is that primer doesn't sit well (in my experience) on un-moisturised skin so I have been moisturising more first which I am lazy with. Also, it sits better (as does foundation generally as my skin gets older) on skin that had been exfoliated once or twice a week. I NEVER did that when I was young! But I have started. And the Primer just softens it all, smooths it all out a little.
