Help my sister find her dress for the Queen's Garden Party?

She's going to one this Summer.

She is 48...size 12, dark hair and olive skin... She likes here and

the 2nd link is the Galaxy advert with the Audrey hepburn lookalike...sis says she loves that colour and print and bodice but the skirt is too full for her height..she's 5.4.

She's lost a lot of weight recently...she's not pear shaped or apple shaped...quite a proportionate size 12.

If she chose the striped dress what colour shoes, bag and cardigan? She doesn't do wraps...hates them. I promised her you lot would sort her out.

budget is not big...up to 150 for all. xx

This is completely random, but with your sister's curves and colouring I think this would look fabulous on her. The colour "pops" more in real life.

The man in that ad is beautiful!

Bunbaker · 14/03/2013 15:00

For what reason did your sister get the invitation?

You might think this an odd question, but one of our local Guide leaders went to one of the Queen's garden parties and wore her Guide leader uniform. The queen walked past all the beautifully dressed ladies and talked to her because she stood out.

HintofBream · 14/03/2013 15:12

I was invited to one a few years ago (all our friends assumed it was DH being invited but it was me and I kindly let him be my accompanying guest). Can't help much on the outfit front, I wore a Jaques Vert ensemble obtained in the sales, however I was also wearing a really pretty silver and turquoise brooch, which I lost somewhere in the BP garden. Ever since I have peered closely whenever the Queen is on TV in case she took a shine to it and is sporting it.

bruffin · 14/03/2013 15:57

To be honest wear what she is comfortable in. Also there are not a lot of seats around so so shoes that can be stood in all day.
I got invited a few years back there was a lot of people in uniform so i doubt a scouts uniform would stand out that much. People are selected to meet and stand in small groups as the royals make their way across the lawns so i doubt the scout leaders story.
I saw 3 others in my dress although not the same colour but there was evrryvstyle going ss well as every hat.
There are 1000s of people, but it is a really lovely day.

MrsMushroom · 14/03/2013 18:30

She has no uniform at all...the reason she was invited..is to do with her services to the disabled.

She wants to wear a low shoe because of the standing...or a wedge...Craic...that is pretty but not very garden party...a bit too evening-ish and she likes the 1950s sillouhette but not too full a skirt due to her height and age.

Bruffin she wants to look nice..she's comfortable in pyjamas! Grin

Grin I didn't mean that comfortable.

I just meant there is such an array of dresses unless you wearing jeans and a tshirt you won't look out of place.

bruffin · 14/03/2013 19:16

Forgot to say everyone wears a hat or fascinator

MrsLettuce · 14/03/2013 19:42

The fullness of the 50's skirts is down to the petticoats more than the cut - you can see it well here, photos one and 2 no petticoat, one added in 3.

MrsLettuce · 14/03/2013 19:49

Oh, though I was previewing

I like the nany and white dress but it's rather frumpy. Might she like this, this or this? the lindy bop audry dresses are nice but not patterned. All the dresses in the links are photographed with a petticoat (which isn't included in the price), they'll fall like the skirt of the pink dress does when they're not filled out with one.

MrsLettuce · 14/03/2013 20:20

this (sans petticoat) with a cropped, pale cream or white cardy, maybe this hat, black patent ballerinas and a floral clutch like this (or this or this) would be fab. Also easily doable in budget.

MrsMushroom · 14/03/2013 20:36

MrsLettuce I know but wouldn't the sheer yardage of some of them look rather little girlish on an older woman?. That first black and white one is lovely and so well priced!

This one from the Hobbs sale?

pinkpolkadot · 17/03/2013 15:30

I know this isn't 50's style but its very lovely and looks flattering on. Quite garden party ish too

What about this?

I'm not sure whether or not it fits the brief, but it is gorgeous!

Limelight · 17/03/2013 16:50

I saw this in Coast today and it really is very beautiful. It would suit a garden party I think

I've just bought this 50s style dress from Next. It's a lot less slim fitting than it looks on the model and more of a circle skirt, although not full at all. I'm 5'5 and it comes down to just under my knee so shouldn't swamp your sister?

I've bought these shoes to go with it. Although they look horrendous on the site! They're really not so frumpy looking IRL, honestly!
