I feel completely in a rut-I am a bit overweight but tackling this through low-carbing. Money is pretty tight at the moment ,but I feel I really need to get out of a rut.I have been cutting my own hair which is now non descript, chin length, frizzy and too dark due to a diy hair colour. I wear a lot of black-I think my colouring is deep winter so that's probably ok, but because I am 6 feet tall I am wary of too much colour as I feel I will stand out too much! Over the winter I have worn leggings and longish tunic tops with boots,or tights with short skirts, but feel I am probably getting to the age where this is a no-no. I just feel I have lost all my confidence and am just frumpy....
Do any of you wise ladies have suggestions please? Has anyone had their colours done....is it worthwhile? I just think if I can get a basic smart casual look that is not too expensive but with clothes to fit my long legs and big norks(34GG), I could use scarves, cardies etc to add colour.

I have no specific advice but don't hide away because of your height. That seems such a shame, especially as I bet there are loads of looks you could pull off that a shorter person wouldn't be able to. Embrace it, don't hide it Smile

New look do 36" leg jeans that are not expensive and quite up to date, just team with some pretty tops that are cheap just now whilst your in the process of losing weight maybe with a cardi flung over the top?
If you can afford it, it really is worthwhile getting a good haircut, ring round a few local salons and see how much they charge, otherwise make sure plenty conditioner and be nice to it.
Its hard to say much else without knowing your colouring or body shape.

Have just noticed the advert for Kettlewell at the side of the page...off to have a look!

I don't think you could do too badly by starting with scarves. Try different colours and patterns out and see what brightens your face/outfit up.

Then possibly a few other accessories - earrings, necklaces. You don't have to spend a fortune, but they help brighten everything up.

Another easy, cheap way to add colour is nail varnish.

When you find a colour scheme you're happy with, go for a vest top. You can team this with things you already have, or layer two complimenting colours.

I would also recommend having your eyebrows threaded. It's around £10 but for the money it makes a dramatic, long lasting difference to your face. You can easily maintain the shape for weeks with a quick go with the tweezers of a morning.

I've thought about getting my colours done. I've gone as far as looking up my local HoC lady.

If you could afford to get a decent haircut, you'd feel loads better.
I dye my own to save money, the John Frieda range is quite often on offer at boots, sainsburys etc.

Are you on pinterest?
I've found that great for ideas.

Yes definitely eyebrow threading. Sleek haircut - could you go short? If you want to use home hair dye on dark hair just bleach it first then you can go any colour!
My hair is dark and I put rainbow colours in it over the summer.

Coloured jeans are great I love them. I am v broke so go to Primark, got some fab snakeskin print ones.

I'm getting my colours done next month so can't comment yet on that. It's £99 but like you nearing 40 some colours are starting to look drab on me. As others have said have a play around with some scarves and see what colours look good. If you thnk you are a deep winter then google that and you can find colour palettes.

Instead of always wearing black have you tried navy or charcoal? My wardrobe is pretty much based round these colours as tops, jeans and then coloured cardigans.

Can't help you with tall jeans as I have short legs but don't places like Dorothy Perkins, topshop, next etc do tall ranges?

Do you have a birthday coming up and could ask for money/vouchers for a hair cut? Or anything to sell on eBay?

dopeysheep · 14/03/2013 09:31

For haircuts maybe ask your local college if they do trainee sessions? They might do nails/ facials etc as well?

happyherdwick · 14/03/2013 11:04

Thanks all, will definitely get a decent haircut-think I will save to get my colours done as have been reading more about it and think its probably a good investment in the long run. I have discovered polyvore and been looking at styles on there too so am getting some ideas. Also going to brave eyebrow threading as a couple of you have recommended it as a quick fix!
