Packing for a 4 day weekend break in London (Yah!!) - lots of sightseeing, going to a show, some meals out with the family, know its cold there at the moment - any advice clothes wise on what to definitely pack???

Um, just normal clothes?

Yes it's cold at the moment so layers would be good. Comfortable shoes for walking around all day. Maybe something nice for meals out and seeing a show, but you don't have to dress 'up' unless you really want to.

That's not much help is it?! A large bag for day time so you can easily stuff your hat/gloves/scarf etc into it is my best advice.

You can see a show in jeans or black tie if you like. The good thing about London is that you can wear what you like and it's ok! Bring an umbrella!!!! If posh meal prob most casual would be jeans and a pretty top with good boots or heels or something.
Def your most comfortable flat shoes for the day.

It's London. No one cares what you wear. Re weather, it's cold!

Plumpcious · 13/03/2013 15:28

I feel a bit mean now. You could dress very glamorously if you wanted, and put the average Londoner to shame!

Cold: single digit Centigrade at the moment (about 40 Fahrenheit). Rain due by the end of this week and into next week. Are you coming from a warm or cold country? Gloves and scarf are a must; hat would be good.

What others have said. Wear what you like and don't forget the comfortable shoes/boots. Only way you might feel a bit uncomfortable is if you over-dressed for a show.

Have just been to Paris for a few days and found that three pairs of jeans and different tops, plus 1 necklace, quilted jacket and scarf, boots, and one pair of shoes, worked fine for everything from checking out shops, studying in a library to a night at the opera.

SerendipityAlways · 13/03/2013 16:13

Plumpcious - Coming from a cold country too so I imagine the weathers just like it is here at home now!!!!
Polyhymnia - Thanks for Paris tip, less is more definitely! I always like your posts on MN so v nice to hear from you!!

Ha ha ha ha I agree with ihate that's the beauty of London, none gives a flying fig what you wear! Grin

Comfy shoes but I doubt it's that cold, London is usually warmer than everywhere else in the UK.

Have a lovely time :)

TelephoneTree · 13/03/2013 21:45

It's chilly!
Today I wore a vest top, long sleeved top, thick jumper, scarf and furry coat and i was just right but got hot after half and hour of walking...

polyhymnia · 13/03/2013 22:04

It is indeed cold here (London) at the moment but would advise some layers rather than v heavy coat because it can get very warm on tube, in department stores etc.

Have a great time!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/03/2013 18:44

Yes to layers - the tube, shops, museums etc are often really, horribly hot.

Couple of pairs of skinnies, flat boots for walking in the day, maybe a couple of thin jumper dresses or jersey dresses which can be worn with layers with boots in the day and maybe with 'nicer' boots or shoes at night. Personally I'd go with a peacoat or biker and a big scarf, rather than a big coat.
