If at all possible, pay someone else to do it.

Otherwise, warm skin from bath, stretch skin taught as poss, pull parallel to skin in direction of hair growth. If your hair is very thick you may need to trim / comb to find direction of hair growth (yes really, comb!)

HTH?

MrsShrek3 · 09/03/2013 21:51

hehee did the trimming thing, or more the point resisted shaving much for a few days, it just seems, erm, patchy Grin

am a regular leg waxer btw, been doing that for 20 yrs.

I cut the strips into small pieces, about 1cm wide by 3cm long, making sure you have the bit you pull on the narrowest side. Trim hair first, its less painful & easier to manage, the strips don't stick to bits of hair you're not actually waxing.
Pull skin taught & remove strip quickly.
That's all really.HTH.

I will definitely second getting someone else, who knows what they are doing, to do it.

CatsCantFlyFast · 09/03/2013 22:02

Outside of getting someone else I will shout loudly for using hot wax that doesn't require strips. Can't remember the brand but I DIY every other wax with one I heat myself and its easy and pretty much pain free. It a little mini metal pan that goes on the stove. I find I have to reheat maybe twice during one wax to keep the right consistency but it removes the shortest hairs without mess and little pain

MrsShrek3 · 09/03/2013 22:40

ooh NWMM that sounds good. must investigate Smile

hmm not shaving for a few days.....you might need to let your hair grow back in longer for a better finish.

CatsCantFlyFast · 10/03/2013 12:25

Sainsburys and boots sell it in a lightish blue box

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 10/03/2013 18:24

I use one from boots that heats in the microwave and just rips off... no strips required, hurts but is effective. Have recently bought emla cream to numb before ripping but after first try don't think I left on long enough as it still hurt. great and long lasting effect though.

rootypig · 10/03/2013 19:09

Eccles try a slug of whisky instead Grin

thecatsmothercompany · 10/03/2013 20:48

Or quit waxing and try shaving instead...
I worked with a dermatologist years ago who told me that hair grew at exactly the same speed and level of 'thickness' (if you know what I mean!) regardless of the way it was dealt with - whether waxed, shaved or whatever else.
According to her the waxing industry was a phenomenal rip off. (And don't get her started on face creams).
Since then, I've stuck to shaving... and as far as I know have not turned into a gorilla. No more ingrown hairs and itchy skin, and I've saved a fortune.
Thought I'd share...

MrsShrek3 · 10/03/2013 21:01

noooo dint say that. have been shaving for years and got thoroughly sick of the frequency iyswim Wink was seriously hoping a waxing would last a few weeks!! particularly a more successful effort than this one Wink

OP posts:
rootypig · 10/03/2013 21:33

I dunno, shaving makes me itch and the regrowth in terms of how soon you feel stubbly is definitely faster - and sharper - than waxing. by weeks. I thought it was because shaving cuts the hair off at the surface, and leaves a sharp tip, the full thickness of the hair, but waxing gets the whole thing from under the skin, and it grows back with the usual finer pointed tip of a new hair iyswim. the growth rate and thickness is still the same of course.... but it can feel and look v different......to me at least. anyway I have dark hair and pale skin so shaving not an option, I look stubbly even when not!

Mosschops30 · 10/03/2013 21:53

Everytime I've waxed it's left me with a rash and then huge ugly spots that last for months Hmm

I use hair removing cream which is better for me

MrsLion · 11/03/2013 07:10

I have been waxing underarms and bikini line for years. I usually go to salon for bikini but do it myself on the odd occasion.

Very lightly dust a bit of baby powder (not one with talcum powder- the one made with cornflour/ corn starch) onto the area just before waxing.

This will absorb any moisture, which renders wax useless, and will help the wax really stick to each hair.

ooh good tip MrsLion, my beautician does that because I am usually running late and sweaty when I get there

I epilate my legs and underarms, would recommend. Braun silk epil.

SpringHare · 11/03/2013 17:33

No tips here, last time I tried it I had totally lost the knack.

I did Grin at thecatsmother's description of the waxing industry as a "phenomenal rip off".

MrsShrek3 · 24/03/2013 22:58

well I got one of those roll on melty wax things. now all I need is bravery to use it Wink
(still need more hints if there are any Wink )

A close friend, plenty of gin for you, and a gag Grin

Bunbaker · 25/03/2013 06:45

That's interesting Thecatsmother I spent a 6 month period of getting my leg waxed regularly and found that the hairs grew back just as quickly as when I shaved them. My wallet grew a lot smaller in the process so I just went back to shaving.
