What does one wear to the Tower?!

I'm not going to get my head cut off or languish for many years hopefully.

I'm going to some sort of military ceremony in the morning in May. What do I wear? i've got a nice wool navy dress from Hobbs which I think would suit but what with?

i'm also going to an evening function at the Naval college in Greenwich, it's a dinner but I haven't been advised of dress code so I'll play it safe and cover knees and shoulders but none of my ball type dress seem to be right.

I'm 5'2, 12/14 with a baby-tummy and boobs but a decent waist and legs. All ideas welcome!Grin

When I saw this thread I thought it meant Oxo Tower and was going to say all eventualities for that venue have been covered in great detail before Grin.
Sorry I can't help with your question, hopefully someone with experience of these events will be along shortly..

No idea about clothes, but for heaven sakes wear sensible shoes. The Tower is surrounded by cobblestones, and inside is also pretty uneven in places.

Antidote, thanks for the tip! I may rethink the lovely green taxi shoes I had in mind then.

For the Tower, find out if you need a hat (know anyone who has been to same event recently?). The weather can still be erratic in May, so a tailored dress under a smart coat would be the safe choice.

Also, how glitzy is the ball? Military dos can be quite old fashioned in having long as the norm (and ballerina length doesn't seem to exist at the moment).

Budget?

LedaOfSparta · 07/03/2013 14:50

Scaevola, I hadn't thought of hat but Will ask.

The evening is a dinner rather than a ball so I'm guessing it's not quite so glitzy.

I'm wanting to spend up to £500 on the 2 outfits. I usually like Coast, Monsoon, Karen Millen but would live to be directed to new places. (Nothing too MOTB I'm a mere girl at 35!)

I rather think it would be time to get grandmama's jewels out the safe deposit box, no?

cantdoalgebra · 07/03/2013 15:04

What sort of military ceremony in the morning?

scaevola · 07/03/2013 15:18

How about this from Fairy GothMother for the evening? If you like the shape/style, have a browse round the site.

Ooooh the Naval College is gorgeous. We used to live near there, I love that area.

I am searching for an excuse to buy this plus a fabulous multi layered swishy petticoat - if I lose the baby weight in time I may get it for a wedding later this year. If I were going to the 'do' I would also get a specialist vintage hair & makeup artist to come and do me Victory rolls and red lips....

LedaOfSparta · 07/03/2013 16:18

But Poledra dahling, does one wear pearls or diamonds?! Smile

Poledra · 07/03/2013 16:37

Diamonds are only for the evening, of course Shock

LedaOfSparta · 07/03/2013 16:45

Big pants and diamonds it is then!

Thanks for websites ladies, I love the Whirling Turban Liz Taylor style dresses but am a bit nervous about not being able to try on.

I think you would need to factor in alteration costs, but they wouldn't be very expensive. I have one of the wiggle style dresses and it's lovely quality. I really want the swirly skirt one though!!!

Beefeater outfit
