I'm 42 on Monday and have terrible spots - help!

Big red sore whoppers on my chin and between my eyes and side of nose.

WTF!

I've not changed my skincare or diet in any way, only started to drink aloe vera juice to help with constipation. Step father died in Jan and it's been a stressfull few weeks.

Am I on the cusp of menopuase? I dobbed on lavendar oil, used a charcoal clay mask etc etc.

What is going on with me? What can I do, eat, slather on etc?

im not a doc but I had this and the pill fixed it - gp said something vague about hormonal surge!

grants1000 · 06/03/2013 12:56

I've got a mirena coil, had it for 2 years and no issues in fact I love it after years of ghastly periods

It may possibly be hormonal. I'm 39 and have started getting huge blackheads and some spots. Since using neutrogena blackhead stuff it's really cleared up. I now have to treat my face in 2 separate ways-blackhead stuff and oil free moisturiser on my chin and forehead and anti ageing stuff elsewhere.

Go to chemist. i suddenly got a terrible spotty rash having had fine skill all my life. Pretty sure it was hormone related. Carried on for about 3 months before I finally went to chemist and he gave me an acne cream - OMG! It was amazing. Within 24 hours the improvement was amazing.

March to the chemist today!

valiumredhead · 06/03/2013 13:48

Have you tried a big dab of Sudocreme - surprisingly effective. La Roche Posay spot cream is meant to be good too according to reviews on here.

JemimaMuddledUp · 06/03/2013 13:51

It might be hormonal, but my spots cleared up when I switched from products for oily skin (which I thought I had as it was so spotty) to products for dry skin.

Might be worth a try?

Sugarice · 06/03/2013 14:16

Chin spots are linked to hormones but get yourself to the GP and ask for DUAC, wonderful stuff and very effective.

Windowbasket · 06/03/2013 14:19

Poor you. I've had the same thing too (nearly 45) and got DUAC from the doctor 2 weeks ago. It has really helped. I've also switched to Liz Earle face wash. Both seem to have helped although I am not out of the woods yet. But I would say definitely go to the doctor - do not waste your money on endless products like I did in the first instance! (None of which worked and all of which made my skin feel tight & uncomfortable.)

I'm 41 and this has happened to me too. Bad blackheads and awful chin. Gave in and went to GP who said very common at this age - surge of hormones (a la teenage) before the menopause ! I've been using Zineryt (which is basically a topical antibiotic lotion) for 3 months and has really improved things - but you need a prescription. Has also stopped the endless buying yet something else in Boots to try...

QuinnFabray · 06/03/2013 17:07

Yes, La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo or Effaclar K, available from Boots.

MechanicalTheatre · 06/03/2013 17:16

I'm with valium on the Sudocrem. I love it. It clears up spots overnight and it is cheap!

You can use it as a mask as well. Spread it on your face and leave overnight. It really does clear skin up.

BadgersRetreat · 06/03/2013 17:37

yes go to the doc

hormonal for me too - age 35. Never had spots as a teenager. These are huge cystic jobs under the skin that last for months and make me want to cry

i take a water retention tablet as has a small hormonal effect on the body apparently, and topical Differin cream.

the diuretic alone does the trick for the most part - not had a zit for 4 months now

shrimponastick · 06/03/2013 17:44

OP - I sugget a visit to the docs too. i suffer and am 45. sigh.. currently onlong term anti biotics, and differin gel at night. Doing the trick mostly,, but soooo oily,

badgers - do you take spironolactone? I asked the derm for that after reading up, but he just pooh poohed it. Are you in the USA or UK?

SoldeInvierno · 06/03/2013 17:52

I used to have the same until i got Dalacyn from the GP. Within a couple of days I was spot free. I wish I had gone sooner rather than spending 100s in Boots

PinkCanary · 06/03/2013 18:13

I've always had terrible skin and no skin products are effective enough. As soon as 1 spots gone, 6 more appear! I'm on the pill (Dianette) which works wonders, although I commented on a thread last week as Drs try to avoid Dianette due to the expense compared to other brands, but it has a good reputation with hormonal skin issues.

Sugarice · 06/03/2013 19:21

As a spotty teenager many moons ago I was on Dianette, it was brilliant!

grants1000 · 06/03/2013 21:07

Thank fuck for that! I could cry! Thought it was just me, felt so hideously exposed and self conscious in a meeting today with the huge red large throbbing sore spots :(

I taken notes of all the advice and have go appt next week. Thank You very very very much. Fingers crossed.
