Trousers! but not jeans, leggings or massively synthetic...

I'm 38, 5'4, about a size 12 and about to go back to work after having dc2. I've got quite a few nice tops and a couple of skirts/ dresses, a decent selection of boots and a few ballet pumps but have realised I have pretty much no trousers except jeans. What style should I go for (I'm slimmish but quite curvy/ got a wobbly tum) and where can I get some that aren't going to break the bank (childcare for 2 is about to cripple me!). I guess they'd be worn with a nice top and cardy most of the time. They don't have to be too smart, as I don't meet clients or anything, but smart enough for day to day office wear.
Thank you in advance!

My work trousers come from George, Peacocks and New Look. As long as you don't go for the ones that look too shiny or feel too crispy, then it should be OK.

I'm a teacher though, and don't spend too much on them as they can often get glue/glitter/paint on them, so I won't spend Next prices on nicer trousers.

Zara have nice work trousers - they are around the £30-40 mark. Anything less thanm that and I think you will be looking at really nasty polyester

NinjaChipmunk · 02/03/2013 20:52

what sort of style do you go for? skin leg, wide leg, cropped?

I found a pair of lovely ankle skimming, cigarette pant style trousers in sainsburys. Really heavy material and look much more expensive than the £22 they cost.

ooh, they sound nice. I'll have a look in their website. is primark any good for that sort of thing or are they really synthetic?

I've not really looked at primary for workwear for ages (not worked for ages) they do tend to favour the shiny, scratchy polyester breeks. I did find a cracking pair of trousers in there once though, so it's worth a rummage.

My adult size and shape DD1 always has marks ladies trousers for school. Very hard wearing and variably synthetic.

However, you need a really big M&S and time to try lots on. They do a vast range of styles of, mainly black, trousers. The are generally big on the waist and shorter in the leg than you expect. Perfect on short fat me, but taller slimmer DD1 finds some styles fit and some don't.
