Mumsnet haircut goes up at the back

I tried the mn haircut for the first time today.

I wanted some length off so after looking at some old threads I cut 1inch from a low ponytail at the nape of my neck.

My hair is a bit shorter but it is obvious that the hair in the middle ie at the nape of my neck is shorter than the sides. Would this be remedied if I cut some more hair off a higher up ponytail?

I'm a bit scared about cutting more off and making it worse!

Any expert wisdom gratefully received. By the way my hair is curly if that makes any difference, I cut it whilst it was wet.

Hair shorter at the nape is the whole point of this haircut, I think.

If you make the ponytail higher, the effect will be more severe and can end up bit 70's mullet.

So I think don't cut anymore, at least until someone else has offered advice!

You could try looking for a tutorial video on youtube (not sure if any exist for this specific haircut, very probable though).

It sounds like you didn't quite do it right, the ponytail needs to be right up at your forehead but if you're not sure then a hairdresser is your best bet!

Arnt you meant to make a unicorn ponytail not a nape one?

Yes the idea is to have a ponytail on the top of your head.

On old threads though people said doing it like that didn't cut anything off the length, so they would do a ponytail at the nape of the neck to make the overall result shorter hair. But they didn't say that would make it go up at the back, so I'm wondering if it needs a cut from a ponytail higher up as well.

I'd did get rather confused with some of the descriptions on old threads where people parted the hair in all sorts of places and used all sorts of ponytail positions!

If you mean you gathered your hair into a ponytail at your nape and cut across, you will get it higher in the middle. This is because the sections nearer the front and above your ears are being pulled back, so when you release the ponytail, they spring forward and are longer.

I haven't read a version of the MN haircut based on a nape ponytail, the only time I would do this is if I was cutting off significant length and wanted to save the hair. I would then continue to cut the hair layer by layer as normal.

Is there any way you can get to a stylist for a trim? I am not sure how you can rectify this now. Or, can you straighten it and get someone to just cut it straight across when it's hanging down your back? It should then bounce back up into your natural curls, hopefully with a fairly even baseline, once you've washed it again.

As far as I understand it, the MN one is brush all of your hair up and forward to a ponytail in the center of your forehead (or off center) and trim, I know whathisface hairdresser - Lee? - has video on YouTube of this technique.

I have longish curly hair. The unicorn ponytail works very well on curly hair although I did look a bit David Coverdale the first time I cut it really short.

If you do a nape ponytail I think you need to twist it to avoid a blunt cut (have done this also)

I would do the unicorn one taking off the minimum. It works well I think.

Thanks ladies. My hair doesn't look too bad, curly hair disguises the discrepancy in length!

I might leave it until I next wash my hair (it has to be wet to cut it) and try a proper unicorn ponytail, just cutting a little off.
