My hands are ruined from working in a hospital a few years ago. I was constantly having to wash my hands, apply alcohol gel and wear gloves. Then coming home doing dishes, housework etc
The skin around my fingers is starting to crack and tbh the tips of my fingers are feeling tender and sore. Not sure whether to go docs for medicated cream if theres anything he can give me or whether someone can recommend one.Even typing is uncomfortable.

popsycalindisguise · 02/05/2006 20:45

neutrogena
or the pink vaseline one

Thomcat · 02/05/2006 20:46

ohhh I've got the best stuff, from crabtree & evelyn - a rose one. All my girlfriends have tried mine and they all loved it.

popsycalindisguise · 02/05/2006 20:46

and lansinoh boob cream for the cracked bits :)

Marina · 02/05/2006 20:48

Neutrogena for immediate remedy and Clarins for maintenance IMO.
As cod says, a cream rich in urea (eg Flexitol) might also heal the cracks up.
You poor thing :(

That stuff is the biz. I am a horny-toed and cloven-hoofed lurker Wink

cod · 02/05/2006 20:50

lol @cloven hoof

mosschops30 · 02/05/2006 20:52

same thing happens to me, when I am working I wash my hands so much and alcohol rub them that the skin on the back of my hands becomes so red-raw it looks burnt.

I tried everything but GP gave a massive pot of something called Epaderm, safe for all the family, fab stuff put it on a few nights and they completely healed.

It is honestly the best stuff ever

Also get a tub of generic 'emulsifying ointment' for about three quid at the pharmacy counter - it's about 75 per cent paraffin wax/liquid paraffin and it's serious gloop. And very cheap.

tamum · 02/05/2006 21:02

Alleluia, I have been sitting here racking my brains trying to remember what that stuff was called. "A big white tub you get from the chemist for a couple of quid" just didn't cut it. Completely agree, emulsifying ointment is the business.

(Actually MI, could we use it instead of Eve Lommy things with muslins, do you think?)

Dh works in a hospital too and suffers from contact dermatitis (his fingers crack and peel) because of hand washing/latex gloves etc. and the GP prescribed him a cream called Stoko Emulsion which is very good.

For 'normal' dry hands I don't think you can beat the Body Shop's Hemp hand cream (in a metal tube) - I've been using it for years and never get dry skin on my hands any more. It's quite heavy and greasy so I just apply it last thing at night - and in the morning my hands are all soft and lovely Smile
