How do I grow out my fringe without getting fed up!?

I have shoulder length layered hair an a fringe that is just a bit too long now. I'm 45 and feel that I would like a change of style at some point, and would like to grow out my fringe and then have my hair cut into a bob that will make me look sophisticated and glamorous Grin ok I can dream!

BUT I have no patience.. I have grown it out to just below nose level several times, got bored and cut it again! How do I a) stop myself and b) grow it out nicely? If I just clip it back I look like a witch!
Any ideas appreciated!

I'm in the exact same boat - I've been trying to grow my fringe out for literally years. And I get fed up by the time it reaches by nose. It looks awful clipped back, and I feel like I look ridiculous with clips in anyway, like it looks too young for me (I'm 36). I'm in the process once again but I'm determined to stick it out this time.

I got my hair cut into a nice short bob so it doesn't look so bad. I just blow dry it over to once side, and now that I've been doing it for a few weeks it sort of stays there now. I'll be watching to see if anyone else has some tips!

i'm trying to grow my fringe too. i am over 50 (+) and aiming to get my too short (basin cut into a longer bob) i posted earlier in the week about it and the advice i got was to use clips and hair bands - i've just been to Boots and got some of those elastic hairbands that you see footballers wearing and am experimenting with those as a way to get my fringe over to the side while it all grows. Like these www.boots.com/en/Scunci-Non-Slip-Head-Band-6-pack_1190500/ they come in various colours to match your hair colour
A good hairdresser should be able to advise you

Same boat here. Plus v fine hair. I find mine looks ok clipped back when my hair is up. Is yours long enough to put up? As mine is so thin, even though mine is long enough to put up, I supplement it with a clip in ponytail to add volume. I use clips that match my hair colour as closely as possible and you don't really notice them. I'm 50+ and dp said I looked very 'regal' the other day! :) So presume the clips don't make me look too mutton dressed as lamby. If my hair is down though, clipping the fringe up doesn't do anything for me. A lot depends on face shape.

Nellymay do you find those Scunci headbands stay in place? I used their hair clips which said they were non slip and they were hopeless. With my fine hair they just slipped all over the place.

Yotam I'm just trying it today, so far so good. I have thick but fine wavy kinky hair

Yotamsrazor · 03/03/2013 17:39

That's good. Not sure it would work for me as hair so fine and slippy. I think your thickness/waviness could well keep it in place. There is very little that doesnt worm its way out of mine pretty fast.

Nellymay · 03/03/2013 19:12

Yotam i wish mine was less kinky and sticking out - but then again we're never happy with our hair. It sounds like you have got to grips (sorry for the pun :)) with your hair.

Yotamsrazor · 03/03/2013 19:26

Not so much got to grips as battering the bloody stuff into submission Nelly!:) It's a battle though because it's a bit see- throughy at the sides/front these days, and while the clip-on ponytail does the trick at the back, I've got the thinning bits to try camouflage round the front. As you say, we're never happy. But I do get comments that my hair looks nice sometimes so I think my never-ending efforts are making the best of a bad mop, as it were.

I would say keep going to the hairdresser and get them to cut it into a 'growing out style' so it's part of your hair cut rather than a separate growing out fringe. Not really sure how to explain but when I grow mine out into a side fringe hairdresser will blend it in a bit and get rid of the 'corner' where fringe and hair meet. Makes it a bit easier growing it out because it stops being like an overlong fringe that is tempting to cut off.
