Channel set diamond rings

Bit of a random question this but wondered if anyone knows the answer.
On a channel set ring, eg a full eternity band with stones all the way round, you know how if you look underneath there are little holes in the band? Well, my question is should there be one stone per hole ie, are the holes to hold the pointy bit at the bottom of each stone?

I have had a ring made that I've discovered to have more holes than stones.

Some of the stones appear to sit centrally in the holes but some of them appear to sit halfway between each hole iykwim. Is this right? There are no gaps between the stones if you look around from above. I'm just trying to figure out if this would be a normal way to set this type of ring.

Even if you don't know the answer but you have this type of ring, I wonder if you would be kind enough to check the number of stones and holes for me and see if they match. Thanks in advance for any help Smile

I have no knowledge, but just checked my wedding band which is channel set diamonds in a thin white gold band - it has a wee hole underneath each diamond, directly under each stone. The diamonds only go round the front half of the ring though.

I have a full channel set eternity band, and it has a hole under each stone.

The hotels are there to let light through, otherwise your diamonds will look flat and dull

  • holes not hotels!

Mine seems to have one hole per stone - full circle so can't be certain. I always thought it was to let the light shine through (such light there is when next to the finger Confused )

Thanks so much everyone, that's what I thought it should be like. I'll be on to them to get it sorted out now then...

Aargh, am out and about just now and just cheekily popped in and asked in local jewellery shop (not ones who made it) the guy in there said number of holes don't need to match number of stones as try don't hold them in place, infancy he showed me a band that had a solid part with no holes (where the hallmark is) with stones above it.
Confused now, do we have any MN jewellers around?! Grin

Mine doesn't. It has stones the whole way round and two solid bits on the inside with hallmark etc. it's from Tiffany so I guess it's pretty standard. Light can't shine through the internal holes unless you have a luminous finger.

Thanks, that's reassuring, maybe there are several ways of doing it?

I'm not sure why you'd need the hole to let light through (a) because you wouldn't get much light in with the ring next to your skin, (b) because surely the stones would be cut to refract and reflect light entering from the top, the same way that you would with a diamond in a rubover setting?

Pseudonymity · 28/02/2013 20:36

Unless it looks like stones are missing or unevenly placed then there isn't a problem. The holes will be to save on gold.

mrscumberbatch · 28/02/2013 22:12

Hello....someone shouted for a jeweller?

In a nutshell, without seeing the ring it's a bit difficult to say, but rings come in a pre-made setting. The holes are there to accommodate different types of stones or if they were a particularly deep stone in a channel setting- to house the pointy back end.

With a channel setting, the stones actually hold each other in place. Which is why if one stone gets broken/cracked the rest tend to go missing/get broken soon after. The holes are just a manafacturing quirk.

Oh and the letting light in thing is nonsense unless you have seethrough fingers Wink

Leather · 28/02/2013 23:45

mrscumberbatch thanks, that's great. My main concern was that the holes were made to hold the pointy ends of the stones in place and worried they would fall out without being in them.
The stones themselves are perfectly evenly spaced and seem well secured by the band rims.
Thanks again to all of you for your input, I feel reassured that all is well with it

My Wedding ring has a hole for each tiny diamond . My eternity one doesn't and that has more stones. Both Tiffany so it must just depend on the style .
