Dry scalp shampoo/treatment advice

Help! I have a patch of psoriasis / dermatitis at the base of my scalp (doc wasn't sure Hmm) and I'd be v appreciative of any advice as to getting rid of it without resorting to steroid creams.
I use Australian organics shampoo and body shop rainforest butter conditioner ( I was using the no SLS Loreal one but thought it prob wasn't as 'pure' as it made out and could have caused scalp issue- I've always had sensitive skin)
I have tried a couple of apple cider vinegar rinses and have just bought a tea tree shampoo (but it says not for chemically treated hair! Mine was highlighted/toned only 2 weeks ago (hairdresser commented on scalp then) and I don't want to ruin the colour!!
So basically I haven't really done anything consistently other than obsess about it!

Try t gel or polytar.

Polytar really really stinks so be warned. I have seborrheic dermatitis but I thought it was Psoriasis for years and thats what I use.

Also, always dry your hair really well after washing.

creamsoda · 27/02/2013 10:41

Thanks wannabe :) I think I used some sort of polytar as a kid. I did look at t gel today but believe it said not advisable when breast feeding (have 6 month old ds, so might have to wait before trying that one)
Interesting about the drying hair well, I'm terrible at doing 'wash and go', even today in the rain! How did u figure out its best to dry?

I have the dermatitis behind my ears (got rid of it for years but having a huge flare up atm) and moisture is the enemy. If it rains in the night I will wake up with a gunky ear. Its spread all across my scalp too but the worst is at my neck where I find I sweat a bit at night. Again, moisture!

If I let my hair dry itself I know all about it for weeks! Didnt know that about tgel and breastfeeding. I wonder if polytar is the same as its quite strong too.

I have eczema/psoriasis/dermatitis on my scalp too. The only thing I have found that helps is Oilatum Intensive (not the ordinary Oilatum). Boots sell it.

creamsoda · 27/02/2013 11:56

Interesting about the sweating too, am in oz and has been hot recently! Wink will definitely dry hair, it looks a damn sight better too if do!
And thanks euro will check that out.
Was considering trying some coconut or olive oil at night to combat dryness but think it might make it too oily.

T gel! it does have a rather pungent odour when you're using it but it doesn't stick around on your hair. Lovely on your scalp and makes my hair super shiny and healthy looking.

MissWooWoo · 27/02/2013 13:40

Oh and I think they do a T Gel for super sensitive skin so maybe give that one a go first - it's clear rather than treacle brown

My DSis had a really sore, itchy, flaky scalp and she now swears by Dead Sea Spa Magik Mineral Shampoo - you can get it on Amazon or I got it in a health food store. I think it says it's for soothing an irritated scalp on the bottle, but it really has made a huge difference to her.
here on Amazon

TwuntingCrow · 27/02/2013 14:16

I use Capasal shampoo - (amazon) recommended by a dermatologist and really helps :)

LovingTheSunshine · 28/02/2013 11:42

My son has excemas/psoriasis in his scalp & I Was told by the GP to massage olive oil in his scalp before bed & wash off in the mornings. It has worked wonders. I myself use Oilative Intensive in my hair & like it.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 28/02/2013 12:28

When I was a child my hairdresser (a family friend) used to put warm olive oil on my scalp and scrape the build up off with a nit comb.

creamsoda · 06/03/2013 11:14

Thought I'd come back and say thank u for your help! Have used some olive oil overnight, tea tree shampoo and dried my hair and its getting better :) hopefully it will go completely soon!!

T Gel is great but not very kind to the hair. I love L'Oreal Anti dandruff shampoo, dark blue bottle with an orange lid - has transformed my scalp so much even my hairdresser commented on it. I wish I'd discovered it years ago, I've had years of being miserable with an itchy, flaky scalp Sad

Titchyboomboom · 06/03/2013 13:34

Pop into a lush and have a chat. They have a huge variety of solid shampoo bars

SlumdogMummy · 06/03/2013 15:15

There is a supply issue with Polytar at the moment. I have eczema and have been using Nizoral instead (which is ok) but will be switching back as soon as Polytar becomes available again!
P.S. You get used to the smell of polytar (after a year or two Wink) and DH quite likes the smell now!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/03/2013 18:23

Gosh I love the smell of T Gel and Polytar. They dry my hair horribly though, so I alternate them with baby cradle cap shampoo.
