How often do you buy new clothes?

  1. Do you buy the odd item regularly or buy a whole lot of seasonal gear at once?
  1. WTF do you do with offspring when shopping?
  1. What kind of percentage of your income goes on your clothes?

Just realised I haven't been shopping properly since ds was born. Have nothing to wear! (Can you tell I've been reading the "What Are You Wearing?" thread, lol?

I love clothes shopping! I couldn't afford to buy a whole lot of seasonal gear at once, so tend to buy a few bits here & there.

My boys are not good at shopping - one moans & the other one tends to sit in his buggy sticking his feet out & knocking clothes of the hangers!Angry I prefer shopping if I don't have to drag the kids with me

Some months I don't buy any clothes & other months I buy lots (especially during the sale season!), but on average I guess around 25% of my wages go on clothes.

  1. I buy the odd item regularly. Generally very cheap stuff, get on Friday I bought two vest tops, one plain for layering and one a bit nicer for summer from X-Zara for £3 each. I then bought a top from Next to Nothing for £3.99 but that was with a £5 voucher left over from my birthday. So I have actually spent £6 this month (ie since 25th which was DH's payday. Will probably buy one or two more items.
  1. I sometimes go in my lunchhour when working, or I take DD (nearly 2) with me. Neither very satifactory. Leading up to Christmas I go at night when the kids are in bed and DH is there.
  1. Of my own income I probably spend 3-5% on clothes. Of joint income it would probably work out at 1%. I also get clothes as presents at Christmas/birthday. My Mum is very generous.

Last month I bought a blouse from X-Zara for £4, some culottes in the Asda sale for £6, a shirt dress from New Look for £20 (money was birthday gift from my Grandad), a pair of peep-toe shoes from Next (with voucher from MIL) two pairs of fishnet tights from Asda for £3.50 and that was it. So excluding the dress and shoes it was a total of £13.50.

Have bought lots of clothes because we are going on holiday in two weeks so we have all been kitted out but these will last us for the summer though.

I'm a very lucky girl at the moment Smile

acnebride · 01/05/2006 22:27

i guess once every three months. it really varies year to year - I think I spent about £300 last year but that's low for me. A lot of money, although about £100 of it was presents.

Luggs · 02/05/2006 08:08

Spent most of maternity leave shopping after 9 months of looking like a tent !!! Mind you it is just as well as DS is 18m now and refuses to sit still for more than 3 mins and so my shopping days are now over !!!!

MrsBadger · 02/05/2006 09:39

always in lunch hours or on way home from work (thank heaven for late night opening).

expatinscotland · 02/05/2006 09:43

I see a lot, but I don't usually buy them. Blush, my mum always takes me on a shopping spree when she comes across or buys me loads of clothes in the States and brings them when she visits.

Kelly1978 · 02/05/2006 09:51

I bought loads last year, I have no idea of the exact figure but prob spent about £3-4k. I had moved down from out in the sticks to Croydon, and jsut had dts. So I was a size bigger, had a lot more shops to choose from and went crazy. Bought a whole new wardrobe. Now I've calmed down, as my wardrobe is full and my weight has stablelized. I just buy the odd new outfit now and then for a change, prob abt £50 a month now on average. I go with all the kids, they don't mind shopping, they are used to it, plus we usually go to a park or something after. ds and dd love clothes too, so like looking for themselves and so when I go I often get them something too. The dts are 13mnths and jsut like being out, so they aren't any trouble neither.

I'd probably spend about £30 every three months or so - as a percentage of our income, less than 1%!

sometimes I have kids with me, sometimes not. I very rarely set off shopping for clothes. it's often just a case of popping into a shop for a quick browse when I'm in town buying groceries

I've also got a few things online from La Redoute, I like looking at the catalogue Smile

Pinotmum · 02/05/2006 10:41

I tend to buy a few bits at the start of Autumn or Spring and then nothing for a bit. I really needed spring/summer stuff this year so have spent lots Blush which dh has pointed out to me several times this weekend Grin. I went through a phase of not knowing what would suit me as I was approaching 40 but I'm more comfortable about that now. Also s dd is at school and ds at Nursery 5 mornings now I have time to shop and try on clothes without rushing which really helps!

Bozza · 02/05/2006 10:44

I never have time to try on and end up returning loads of things.

vickiyumyum · 02/05/2006 11:04

i love shopping! full stop!
i go shopping at least once a week, and the boys are at scholl so used to be on my day off from work and i would be by myself, but now have a 6 week old baby and it was really difficult whilst she was younger (!!) to get out so now i am fully mobile i am making the most of it.
i usually spend about £200 a month on myself and dh in shops like next, m&s, plus mk one, new look and primark also like to treat myself occassionally with nice outfit or top, skirt from somewhere like house of fraser. also pick up quite a bit of stuff for me and the children when food shopping at asda or tesco and savacentre.
i spend about the same on the childrens clothes each month, but that includes things like school trousers, ds1 alwasys eems to put the knee through on his playiong football and shoes, again always seems like each month one of them needs new shoes or trainers. dreading when dd is older as i already have a shoe fetish and she is bound to have more than one pair at a time.
that adds up to roughly 4k a year which is less than .5% o annual income

nutcracker · 02/05/2006 11:07

When I desperatly need them.

The kids get clothes when they need them only and even then they have to wait.

notasheep · 04/05/2006 21:57

4K a yearShock

shazronnie · 06/05/2006 15:48

vickiyumyum you must be loaded
Envy

crunchie · 06/05/2006 16:25

I am trying to limit myself to about £50 a month, but last month I went a bit mad with 2 prs jeans and a top from Monsoon £128
Shorts from DP's £5
Asda dress £12
Jakt/cost Debenhams £10

:)

Im April I spent about £50 ish, but in March probably £100 again.

I still need a pair of denim shorts (long culotte style) and a few new t-shirts for summer. I am 2 or 3 sizes smaller than last year so not much fits. I am sorted for Summer skirts/dresses now, so it is only bits and peices - AND SHOES :)

I take my kids shopping, they enjoy it! But they are girls.

Blandmum · 06/05/2006 16:28

Vickimum, you have an annual income of £800,000?!!!!

Bloody hell

MissChief · 06/05/2006 17:02

just realised only spend about 0.6% of income on my clothes (if that was the question or total for family??) !!
must get out that credit card then..
never done the "season" thing - prefer sales bargains and then occasional hunt for odd item, always have at least 1 kid with me, ok if baby, nightmare if not!
