Bright Red Lipstick

I am in my fifties. I love my red lipstick but I am beginning to think that it is starting to make me look a bit harsh or a bit mutton dressed as lamb.

Do you think I should wear it anyway? Or should I start to think about a more neutral shade? What colours would you recommend?

If it suits you and you love it, stick with it!

You'll probably need a subtle shift in shade as you age (just like with hair dye) but there's no reason why you should give it up.

A good strong fuschia can do the red lipstick thing, IYSWIM. Is nice for a change.

Is your lippy very shiny? SOmething more matte might be more flattering.

My favourite question!
now, start with a sheer - you don't say anything about yourself, so I'll volunteer my favourite sheer - Nars Gypsy.
Gypsy is practically a nude, it's that easy to wear.
then, go to Mac?Chanel/Shiseido and keep trying.
Once you find The One, buy two. Otherwise they will discontinue it and you will cry.

Oh sorry!
Just saw red lipstick and got carried away. Wine didn't help...
Skin gets a bit darker when we age so it might be a good idea to try a few new shades.
Or try a sheer!

Mac Ruby Woo is my personal favourite. An utterly matte, true red.

I think it depends on your skin tone and hair colour. If they have gone much lighter then maybe you should adjust your lip colour to suit. You could still wear red but in a more sheer formulation. Not gloss but perhaps a soft shine one like Clinique and Maybeline have.
Lips get thinner as we age and dark matt colours emphasise this. Or you could go for a more muted reddish tone like soft plum or even rosy pink. Estee Lauder do a nice shade called Blush which is a wearable coral.I'm blonde with fair skin and it suits me plus it's also fashionable right now.

No Granite - no neutral - you could disappear!! Get the right red for your skin tone, apply it perfectly, using bleed stopper if necessary, keep it well maintained throughout the day, and feel confident and groomed and gorgeous. I love Ruby Woo too Lettuce

Quick highjack- What red/fuchsia would suit me-v pale skin, near black hair (Sophie ellis bexter colouring) and green eyes?

OP I'd still wear it....maybe soften with a gloss on top or Revlon do new lipstick pencils which are nice and soft and slightly glossy.

THE best red lipstick EVER is Revlon Colorstay Opulent Garnet. I get asked where I have bought this lipstick all the time. It is absolutely beautiful, stays put without turning flakey and is a red with a hint of pink. It's very vibrant but not harsh IYSWIM. I have to buy it off eBay now as they have stopped making it. I have stocked up as it is perfect. I have a winter colouring, that is a pale cool skintone, dark hair and green/blue eyes and I need a lipstick with a lot of saturation. It is not at all like Revlon Cherries in the Snow which I think is a harsh neon pink but is often described as a red/pink.

Others that are pretty good are Mac Ruby woo ( although this is hard to apply and I think looks better in the summer) and Revlon really red matte. Certainly red by Revlon is glossier and pulls more pillar box on me but it good when that is what you are after.

My husband bought me a Guerlain lipstick but to be honest I was underwhelmed with the formulation. It just bled everywhere.

The Kate Moss matte darker one is pretty good when I want a more berry lip. Loreal did a great colour called cassis but again that feathered and didn't last long enough.

Rimmel has a great darker red lipstick called Berry Queen. I wish this one lasted a bit longer as the colour is gorgeous.

OP I think toning down your lipstick if it suits you can wash you out and make you look older. Lots of older women look stunning in red lipstick. Look at Betty Jackson for example.

dontyouwantmebaby · 23/02/2013 22:37

granit, please keep wearing your red lipstick if you love it and enjoy wearing it, that is what matters. There is no age limit for red lipstick. Some people don't find their perfect red until they are older IME! in fact it was a friend in her fifties who wisely introduced me to red lipsticks after seeing me wear unflattering nudes.

I now wear mac russian red, as other posters I also like ruby woo but prefer russian red on me. Another lovely mac colour (not a bright red) is see sheer which I wear on non-russian red days. I think your make-up grows with you whatever your age, so would say wear whatever feels comfortable to you. There really are no rules other than what feels right for you Smile

Personally I think red lipstick works better on those of us who've left our youths behind! Wink

buttercrumble · 24/02/2013 09:32

Bourjois rouge edition, number 14 is an amazing blood red lippie. Its much better than my clarins one and cost a third of the price. Its about 7 quid in boots....

buttercrumble · 24/02/2013 09:36

Sorry i didnt read the question properly, i think it looks amazing on women of all ages . If it suits you keep wearing it, red lippie is so glamorous......
