I used to when there was a gym nearby, but am out in the sticks now :(

Loved it, was just a municipal gym at local leisure centre but I told them what I wanted to achieve (for me upper body strength and better stamina) and they gave me a programme to follow on machines and free weights. I loved it, and would alternate a gym trip with a swimming session as they had lane swimming every night.

It's expensive but for me that was the kick up the arse to get me out there - no point wasting money by not using it. Plus I came out feeling so good every time. Does wonders for a low mood.

MrsDoomsPatterson · 17/02/2013 13:31

I play tennis at mine, worth its weight in gold!

eminemmerdale · 17/02/2013 13:35

Yep, I go swimming three or four times a week - used to use the gym upstairs but have been a bit lazy lately Blush. It's brilliant. A chance to bget away from the house and there's areally nice coffee bar/restaurant there as well, so i often sit down after with a drink and read for a bit. 'My Time'. Is DH and i ever get an hour without the children we play badminton too, but that's quite rare lately!

ilovepowerhoop · 17/02/2013 13:39

I dont go the gym itself but do 5 or 6 exercise classes per week e.g. I try to do 3 x powerhoop, 1 x zumba, 1 x LBT and 1 Body Pump class. I dont use the swimming pool either.

Furball · 17/02/2013 13:43

I do similar to ilovepowerhoop just do the classes which is included in the membership.

I can also use the pool and gym too.

ivykaty44 · 17/02/2013 13:46

I go to a gym, it is a golf and leisure place, it is my luxury and although not cheap I justify it as I don't smoke or drink Smile

I go to classes, swim and relax in the sauna. It has become part of my life and it just slots in so I do about 5 classes a week.

EuroShagmore · 17/02/2013 13:49

Yep, usually run at the weekends and do cardio/weights in the gym a couple of times in the week. Got a BFP this week, so will be swapping the running for swimming, but carrying on with the gym sessions.

It's near my office in Central London so is horrendously expensive but I know from experience unless it is convenient, I won't go as much as I should.

Southeastdweller · 17/02/2013 13:54

Fitness First member here, on the Black Label membership so I can use all the gyms everywhere when I want as well as all classes and I average five sessions a week. Some of the branches have pools.

Worth every penny of the £64 I pay monthly.

AlwaysReadyForABlether · 17/02/2013 13:55

We have a gym at work so I use that. Go to classes and also pay extra for personal training sessions. I love the variety of classes available but PT sessions really push me and get doing things I would never do on my own.

axure · 17/02/2013 13:59

Yes we have family membership at local municipal leisure centre and all go at differing times at least 3 times per week; would do more if we had time. I use the gym, pool and spa, its good value for money and I feel 100% better after a good exercise session.

eminemmerdale · 17/02/2013 14:22

It is certainly worth it as long as you use it - paying £££ makes you!!

Murraylover · 17/02/2013 14:39

Our local municipal is great & 1mi away. Swim 3times a week. Gym+swim or class+swim to get in shape/worth spending £40/m gym. Good value £12/m swim monthly pass.

formallyknownasloveydarling · 17/02/2013 14:44

As the others have said, it is a great thing and has been invaluable to me in terms of mental as well as physical health. But you need to be 100% certain as most gyms tie you in for a 6 month or years contract and it is both expensive and depressing to find you are paying but not going.

ilovepowerhoop · 17/02/2013 14:51

you can pay as you go at our council gym/swimming pool but if you do 2 or more classes a week then it is cheaper to get a membership. I pay about £35 a month but must save a fortune as I do 5 or 6 classes a week that would cost £4/£5 each so get my moneys worth.

BelindaCarlisle · 17/02/2013 15:14

Yup. 4 times a week. But not to swim

BelindaCarlisle · 17/02/2013 15:16

Lol at power hoop. Wtf?

ilovepowerhoop · 17/02/2013 15:20

www.powerhoop.co.uk/powerhoop.html - I use the 5lb weighted powerhoop - great for toning up the tummy area. Took a while to keep the hoop up but now I find it addictive

BelindaCarlisle · 17/02/2013 15:21

You're the owner aren't you?

ilovepowerhoop · 17/02/2013 15:27

lol, no I'm not - I only started going to classes in November. Others that go started last Easter and are so much better at it than me and can do dance moves, etc while hooping. I'm still concentrating on keeping the hoop up while moving my arms at the same time.

ilovepowerhoop · 17/02/2013 15:34
- Powerhoop Class at Hell Gym, Norway (powerhoop was first launched in Norway - I live in Scotland!)
hermioneweasley · 17/02/2013 15:37

Yes. Virgin active. Only manage to go once or twice a week though....

Mrsrobertduvall · 17/02/2013 15:43

Gave up my membership in January after about 6 years.
Wasn't going enough(it's about 3 miles away, but heavy traffic) and I'd had a personal trainer...felt I didn't need to do it anymore.

I've been using Jillian Michael's shred dvd at least 4 times a week, plus pilates.

EricIsMine · 17/02/2013 15:52

I swim three times a week at the local Total Fitness, it works out cheaper than going to swim at the local council owned pool and it's a million times more pleasant! I'm not a regular into the workout gym bit, but may pick that up again in the next month or so to shift half a stone for Summer

slug · 17/02/2013 16:10

I alternate swimming with the gym at a gym very close to work. It is generally acknowledged amongst my colleagues that I am much easier to get on with and less prone to control freakery if I have had my lunchtime session. I also run in the evenings if I can be bothered

JumpHerWho · 17/02/2013 16:59

Nope - I don't believe in excercise Smile

Only partly joking - I am a SAHM with a toddler and am on my feet most of the day and cook fairly healthy meals, so even with weekly pizza and Pringles binges I feel healthy. I only ever feel like I'm punishing myself at the gym, I don't enjoy it and for me it's about weight loss not 'toning' and diet changes always work a million times better for me than exercise. I think if you lead a fairly active existence then structured exercise is unnecessary, but I appreciate if you have an office type job then it's prob helpful.
