Which hair colouring kit is the best....

FabMum1 · 15/02/2013 22:04

I've decided I need to colour my hair. It's shoulder length and I'd describe it as dry ends caused by previously bleaching it.

I want to go light brown but can't afford to go to a hairdresser, so will need to do it myself.

Can anyone recommend a good hair colour to buy, one that will moisturise as well as colour. I love the colour of Olivia Palermos hair

Thanks ladies

What colour are you now?

FabMum1 · 15/02/2013 22:16

I have 1 inch roots of my natural colour, mousey brown and the rest is a browny colour with a reddish tinge. It was previously bleached underneath and the brown on top has totally faded.

Really hard to say from what you have said about the colour.
Light brown dye probably won't deal with the red and won't be strong enough to lift the colour. I think you need to go to a hairdresser.

Cerealqueen · 15/02/2013 22:41

Sorry, just re read and you said you can't afford it so I hope somebody with some specialist knowledge can help more!

Cerealqueen · 15/02/2013 22:42

Model / trainee night at local salon/ hairdressing school?

Hassled · 15/02/2013 22:42

I don't have a preferred brand but I do think it's worth spending a few extra quid on home dye kits - so I go for the £9.99 ones rather than the £5.99 ones, IYSWIM. And there's usually an offer on at Boots. Mousses are much easier to apply.

daisydoodoo · 15/02/2013 22:45

My hairshad all sorts of colours and bleaches on. I find garnier nutrisse covers everything as long as going for the browN scale. It even covered my red as in pillar box red.

FabMum1 · 17/02/2013 08:28

Is that semi permanent?

OP posts:
ilovepowerhoop · 17/02/2013 08:38

I think nutrisse is a permanent colour. I have used Olia and Feria recently with good results. I have used the John Frieda mousses but only when they are half price (cost about £11 full price which I refuse to pay!) - the mousse colours dont last as long IME.

L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss is a semi-permanent range

FabMum1 · 23/02/2013 22:09

Is olia and feria permanent?

Do the colours really come out the same as on the box? Or darker?

OP posts:
ilovepowerhoop · 23/02/2013 22:10

Olia and Feria are permanent - they do tend to come out a but darker than on the box

FabMum1 · 23/02/2013 22:13

Right, so if I want brown maybe pick one called 'dark blonde'?

Plus something that doesn't say permanent ?

ilovepowerhoop · 23/02/2013 22:20

ilovepowerhoop · 23/02/2013 22:23

Is there a Salon Services near you ? (Assuming you're in the UK). If so, go in and have a chat with them. I'm thinking you should get as much off the ends as possible (if they're very dry) and then use a colour stripper to remove the brownish/reddish tinge. Then put your chosen colour on top. Again the folk at Sally's would be able to advise on that.

You can buy colour stripper from Boots (Colour b4, etc) and they're pretty good. Depending on hair length you might need two boxes. I've always found Nice'n'Easy to be a good, reliable brand for colour

FabMum1 · 24/02/2013 20:53

Thanks fanjounchained, never thought of going into Sally's for advice.

I'm just totally fed up with my boring hair and need a change

FabMum1 · 24/02/2013 22:23

OP posts:
ilovepowerhoop · 24/02/2013 22:28

they have permanent and non-permanent colours - you just need to read the box to see which is which.
