Buying "old fashioned" clothes for a 7 year old boy - help needed

DS1 is 7. He dubbed his own style "old fashioned" yesterday and all week has worn a combination braces, bow tie, shirt, blazer or waistcoat (he only has one of each of these things apart from a shirt).

He is clearly choosing to wear these things and therefore i would like to get him some more bits, he has also asked. The high street at present is embracing this sort of thing it seems but I would like to get him some more unique stuff (bow ties etc). He would also love a hat and shoes but I have no idea where to start.

I have found one website www.etsy.com that does some lovely bow ties but other than that am drawing a blank.

Any ideas?

Rachel Riley? I bought several bits for DD when she was little and malleable...

Lovely stuff. I just saw a striped blazer he would love, but very expensive. Might have to google clothes like rachel riley. Thanks for the starting point.

Zara have stuff that fits in to this sort of look. Be careful, though- encourage but don't lead. He needs to be in control of this, and you need to be sure he doesn't get a hard time from his mates for pushing the fashion boundaries!

mixedmamameansbusiness · 15/02/2013 18:58

Absolutely Seeker. He has just refused to wear anything else all week and has more than once asked for more. Luckily at present he has friends that think he is quite cool for looking different and a few got blazers like him. I will take it on board though, don't want him to become too eccentric. I just showed him bow ties and he asked if there is a website for "old doctors clothes" - I kid you not.

There is a company called Bramleys by mail, they're also on not on the high street. I'm not entirely sure if they're still going but worth a google.

Sounds gorgeous, I think boys look lovely dressed in this way. Check out h&m and next as they sometimes do things in "heritage" style, what I would deem quintessentially British.

VincenzaOfSaragossa · 15/02/2013 20:45

My DS is 11, and his 'look' is also doctor-like. I did try to persuade him that Johnnie B would be quite nice, but he declared it 'too casual'...

Start rite do nice loafers for boys and have seen loads of fairlisle tank tops , jumpers in m&s, h&m, Asda for boys. john lewis are also good for corduroys.

unluckyfriedkitten · 15/02/2013 21:13

John Lewis had a lovely tweed jacket & waistcoat last time was there. Had I had enough I'd have bought them for my eldest who likes dressing like Mr Bean, bless him.

He likes his trilby hat we bought from Next a few years ago.

Ladyflip · 15/02/2013 21:21

Look at Bonart for some "country" style clothes like tweed jackets and check shirts.

VincenzaOfSaragossa · 15/02/2013 21:54

Also: are there any old-fashioned menswear shops where you live? There are a couple of really, really old-stylee ones where I live, and DS's tie collection has been greatly enlarged after a couple of visits. They also have things like hats and bow ties that you can't find anywhere else. Worth investigating, perhaps.

Nothing helpful to post but - how cute! Smile

Start Smart

fossil971 · 15/02/2013 23:33

It's funny, I took DS (8) shopping the other week and the only thing he wanted to look at was a smart jacket- he wants to look like Matt Smith in Dr Who basically. I promised I'd look out for a tweed jacket for him - some good links here.

Agree with seeker. Do with care

mysteryfairy · 16/02/2013 08:39

I don't think I would be keen personally on bow ties for everyday wear and would be trying to ensure DS looked like he was in normal clothes with that edge rather than in fancy dress. Is there a Dr Who who wears bow ties as that could be at the bottom of the inclination? Anyway we go through a lot of bow ties in this house as they have to be worn for music performances. I really recommend eBay for buying them super cheaply. I always struggle to buy them in the shops but pick them up for one or two pounds each on eBay.

seeker · 16/02/2013 08:58

I was going to suggest eBay. But I think my note of caution came from my experience- ds went through a "surfer dude" phase which I absolutely loved- and he had to be very assertive with me to make me realise that he had moved on and was now an Indy kid. I bought quite a few lovely clothes that ended up BNWT on eBay..........!

BelindaCarlisle · 16/02/2013 08:59

I think you're taking his opinions too seriously. Just say "oh yes very" and carry on as you were. ;)

FaceLikeAPickledOnion · 16/02/2013 11:02

Have had great hats from h&m for ds.

seeker · 16/02/2013 11:15

Ds has fab Zara hats.

I let mine loose in charity shops- freedom to choose but not break the bank.

montmartre · 16/02/2013 21:42

Sounds very Dr Who, and a mix between classic English country and US Preppie style.

So selected pieces from Gap, Ralph Lauren, John Lewis, Joules, Boden, Marks and Spencer, Zara, H&M, White Company- none of which are cheap (except perhaps H&M) however, all readily available on ebay.

My ds has a tweed jacket (M&S), button-down oxford shirts (gap, JL, and White company), cords (boden, gap, M&S), yellow and red twill trousers (H&M) - looks great... but as yet he has no say in what he wears Wink
