right, I'm a grown up and a mum now- what do I wear?

Ok, so I've lived in Topshop and ASOS from teens to twenties, I am now 28, about to become a mum, and rethinking my wardrobe.

None of my old clothes are really breastfeeding friendly- I really like clothes from The White Company (I'm thinking skinny jeans, long loose tops, vest tops and cardigans) that are suitable for when you have a baby. But I don't like the prices. I need something more Topshop prices range- but I don't like Dorothy Perkins- never see anything that 'grabs' me.

Do I need to change my shops? I look in Topshop now and just see loads of clothes I love, but aren't suitable, and aren't really functional.

Where should I be shopping?

Help!

H&M is great for cheap jersey basics (vests, long tops, tunics, dresses etc) that can be layered and stretched for breastfeeding. Apart from that, you don't need to change your look just because you're a mum Smile

Thanks Sleepthief- I'm hoping to just adapt it...I think what I was wearing before (pencil skirts, body con dresses, stupidly high heels) just won't be practical day to day- I need to find some comfy, running around clothes, that I can wear every day and be comfortable.

Did I mention comfortable??

I will check out H&M- I do have a lot of their basic vests- what are they like for quality with their knitted cardigans/jumpers etc?

Mango does some great basics, mango outlet is great for things that might get babied. Some things don't wash out. So stylish but cheap for the first year and things you can layer so you can have some modesty when great feeding. :)

Ohhh Mango is great- I had forgotten about Mango! I'll have a look- thank you!

For comfort I wear yoga tops and bottoms in the house and leggings and base layers with a jacket when I go out. Salomon and merrell do great shoes for running about with a buggy.

Quality is fine. It's not going to last forever, but at those prices it doesn't matter so much when it gets covered in snot/vomit/purée/chocolate. Quite a lot of polyester (if that is an issue for you), but a fair amount of 100% cotton too. Agree that maybe high heels aren't going to be practical on a day to day basis if you're running around after a toddler, but again you'll be able to adapt that as and when.

ohmy- thanks, I haven't heard of that brand so I'll have a look!

sleepthief- that is a very good point! I will head down to lakeside and start building up a wardrobe.

Yup, my heels have been at the back of the wardrobe for a while now, I look forward to wearing them again...but I think it might be a while!

Shoes-wise depending on the weather I wear Hudsons, Ash bikers, supergas, converse, saltwater sandals, flip flops, brogues, clarks Yarras and a recently acquired pair of wedge trainers... Not at the same time obviously, but all totally comfortable and practical.

Reading that back, maybe I have too many shoes Blush

Littleturkish · 13/02/2013 14:55

Hahaha

never say those words! You can never have too many shoes!

Some good advice. Make sure you don't totally change. When I had my first baby I was swayed by what I thought mums should wear and what I read on MN. A few months in I looked at myself and didn't feel like me at all anymore. This time round I've stuck far more to what'd I'd usually wear and have felt much happier because of it.

And anyway, when they're little and don't need running after, you can wear heels (as long as they're in a pram and not a sling maybe)
