Ok so nearing the big 40, but it seems my mind is, or has for the last decade(s) refused to acknowledge that I have become a grown up!

I usually 'knock about' in skinny jeans, jumpers, hi tops or ankle boots, pretty much what my 19 yr old niece wears!!! When she visits I draw inspiration from her, although I accept I can't wear some of her things, she's very long & extremely lean & well I'm shorter & wider.

I'm a sahm at the moment so no need to 'power' dress or dress 'smartly'. But I am wondering if I do look 'daft' in my casual clothes - can skinnys, hi tops, hoodies, look mutton on some ladies my age? I have been told I don't look my age....

I do make an effort in my appearance I like to do my hair, most days anyway, and I wear make up, so I'm not a total tomboy! I'd like to think I could dress smarter but I know really its not me, kind of dressed up with no where to go sort of thing!

To be honest, it sounds like you enjoy fashion in your own way and make an effort with your appearance. In my mind, you should carry on with the way you are because it sounds like a reflection of your true personality. By all means experiment with more styles, but there's no need to try and be something you are not :)

Sounds absolutely fine to me... But then I'm a similar age and I tend to dress young!

To be honest, I thought the phrase "mutton dressed as lamb" had gone out with my mother's generation until I started reading S&B! None of my friends say it - at least not to my face Grin.

Agree with 50shades. I'm the same.

Read the mutton thread OP. There are a few of us 40 and over knocking about. Clinging to our youth:)

Are you me?! I'm also heading for 40 and wear much the same as you describe. I do work but from home so live in pyjamas comfy loungewear the rest of the time. I've recently lost a lot of weight and now fit into a lot of the teen ranges - unfortunately DD (10) is starting to fit into the same ranges so I have to be careful I don't end up dressed the same as her!

I think if you feel comfortable with yourself then there is no right or wrong, the only things I would avoid these days that I may have worn when I was younger is anything too short/tight/flesh-exposing. On the other hand if you are questioning it maybe you're not that comfortable in which case I don't think it's hard to make that look slightly 'older' by for example losing the hi-tops or swapping the hoodies for some swanky knitwear or something.
