Working wardrobe for one month in Caribbean

I'm going to do voluntary work on a Caribbean island for a month (August) this year. I won't be spending a lot of time at the beach but may need something posh for a couple of evenings out.
Please help me plan a suitable wardrobe to cover every eventuality bearing in mind that I have very little money to spend and can only take one smallish bag for clothes.

You've only posted this to gloat about a month in the Caribbean haven't you? :)

No ideas at all but didn't want you to feel ignored!

Well, SoupDragon, I must admit that there are worse places to work Grin but I really do need advice! I've never been anywhere so far or so hot before, my present summer wardrobe is on its last legs and money is really tight.
Thanks for the message though Wink

What sort of work will you be doing Maverick (and good for you, by the way Smile), as it will dictate the sort of clothing.
Personally, I wear loose thin but covering clothing in hot countries - so if the kaftan-top look endures this summer, that would be perfect. With loose thin trousers. Have seen lots of cheesecloth dresses in the shops, too - will wash easily, dry quickly and not need serious ironing.

Avoid any synthetics.

Hi Blu! I'll be training teachers.
I'm very fair skinned so will need to keep covered up.
Does cheesecloth need ironing? I'd prefer to have wash and wear stuff. That cuts out linen which is a shame as I love linen Sad
I'm 5'1'' - cropped trousers or normal length?

Ummm, I'm not actually sure whether cheesecloth needs ironing, but I wouldn't think so.
I'm sure cropped trousers would be fine , and look great with long topsand if you take some thin skirts, you could dress them up with belt and accessories for any smarter events you need to attend.

It sounds a brilliant thing to do!

My sister bought a skirt from New Look which is a crinkle effect. She actually screws it up to wear it. It is quite light as well and would travel easily.

TBH dont buy anything to take with you. the markets in the Carib are soooooooo cheap and you will be able to pick up cotton dresses for a fiver or less (if you haggle!)

Where exactly are you going maverick?

Where you are going will dictate to an extent what you can buy - one some islands there is almost nothing worth wearing, and not much in the way of shops.

I used to work a lot in the Caribbean and used to wear summery type light skirts and blouses. Smartish dresses and sandals also good. Some lights suits are useful, but depending on how formal the situation will bem you may not need jackets.

I always find the Caribbeans to dress quite formally, especially the women.

Carriacou, Caribbeanqueen.
Will I need ANY warm clothes or are they unnecessary?
Thanks for the crinkle skirt tip, collision -I'll pop into New Look soonish.

I would take a cardigan and a pair of full-length trousers, as sometimes there can be a bit of a breeze in the evenings. Nothing like we would understand as warm clothes though!

Caribbeanqueen · 26/04/2006 09:27

Meant to add that Carriacou is pretty small so there probably won't be that much in the way of shops (haven't been though so may be wrong), but if you go to Grenada as well, then that's a really lovely island - or was till the hurricane - and there should be markets there like collision mentioned.
