...or do you know what colour your hairdresser uses on you ? I'm currently very light blonde but very bored with it. Went red a while back but put the red dye on top of the blonde and looked like something out of a cartoon. This time I'm planning to let the blonde grow out then dye it. My hair is very short so hoping to have the bleach out my hair in 8 weeks or so...What are your recommendation MNers Grin

I use Lush henna too - 2 squares of the maron and 1 square of the noir, which gives me a deep red. As others have said, it builds up each time you do it.

I don't bother grating it (takes far too long and makes too much mess), instead I just cut up the squares and put them into a bowl of really hot water and put the bowl over a pan of boiling water. Stir it every couple of minutes and it takes around 5 - 10 minutes to dissolve - just long enough for a coffee Grin.

I use a cheap shower cap over it, with a beanie hat on top to make the colour more intense.

My one concern with using Henna is that if I don't like it then it's going to be a nightmare to get out of my hair as I can't dye over it...is that correct ? Whereas with Nice n Easy or L'oreal I could always strip the colour and dye over it....oh the dilemma...as if this is all I had to bloody worry about Grin

Well if you didn't mind going a bit darker then you could always henna indigo over the top of it if it's too red/orange.

As long as you use a henna without mineral salts (so the lush henna or any body art quality henna from a reputable supplier) then dyeing over with a darker shade shouldn't be a problem but I think getting the red out to go blonde might be a problem.

Prob best to do a strand test if you aren't sure.

Yes, think I will be chopping a bit of my hair off and doing a wee test run...Don't want to go too dark. I did go very dark brown a few years ago after a home dye disaster and I felt it made me look really old.

Well for anyone looking for an update I opted for dye over henna....(thought that if I really didn't like the red then at least I would be able to use another dye to rectify the problem !) Went to Sally's and asked the girls for some advice.

Given that my hair was so light blonde, they suggested I pre-pigment my hair so that the red dye would cling to it better. They gave me a mid-brown mousse to do this and I picked a lovely copper red colour from the Rusk range to put on top. Dyed it last Thursday night and it came out a very, very dark kind of reddish brown. It was a lovely colour - just not on me IYSWIM Grin

Washed my hair with Ariel for a few days to strip as much dye as possible and then bought Feria Intense Mango Copper from Boots and slapped that on. Surprisingly I have not gone bald Grin and it's came out a lovely red/copper colour. Still not quite the colour I'm looking for but close to it.

My hair is not in too bad condition which I'm very surprised about.
