Trainers for the gym - what sort do I need?

Firstly I have to admit that the last trainers I bought were about 15 years ago and were more 'fashion' than 'fitness' trainers (Adidas shell-toe ones). Blush

I've decided to join a gym and try and tone up a bit but need some trainers and, TBH, there are so many around I don't know where to start.

I'm likely to do weights machine type exercise, maybe some exercise bike/rowing to warm up rather than running machine (knackered knees).

I can get to a Sports Direct and JJB to try on and buy.

I'm in my mid-40s so please don't recommend anything too youthful that will make people laugh at me Wink

Can someone point me in the right direction please.

oh, I meant to add that I'd prefer if they weren't too pricey as this could be a brief fling!

Just find a pair that feel comfortable. I have some Nike trainers and they seem alright. I watched a programme last year about the sports industry and how they try and make you feel like you need to buy specific types of trainers, but the expert said that this isn't needed for normal people doing exercise and to just buy trainers that fit and feel comfortable. My trainers are similar to this.

Oh thanks Dexter, I like the look of those - if they're comfortable then they'll be fine.

I think when I was browsing I was being confused by all the high-tech looking ones with weird bits in the heel, odd shaped soles etc.

Bring back the days where it was a choice between Dunlop Green Flash or Woolies own brand Grin

If you go to sports direct or jjb they have a pad/machine that you stand on this will tell you what kind of arch/foot shape you have and which trainers will suit you.
My husband had normal trainers and had shin splints he got some new ones that suited his arch and he runs all the time in these (his are newbalance) without any problem. Hope that helps x

If the op is only using the trainers for cycling/rowing she doesn't really need to worry about gait etc.
