Why are skater/prom style dresses so unflattering on me???

Is it just me? I think it must be. Just been reading another thread where dresses like this were being recommended but I just looked at them all knowing they'd make me look horrendous. I know this as I bought a similar one a few months ago, absolutely loved it but have only worn it once cos it makes me feel FAT. And no, I don't really have body-image issues, am 5'3" and size 8-10 and I know some shaped do suit me - e.g. skimming shift dresses. I do have a bit of a tum but I would have thought a nipped-in waist would help with that. And skinny legs Maybe I have a huge arse that I'm just not aware of!

Rant over! Just gutted as I keep seeing lots of nice dresses I can't wear!

Are your boobs big ? That was my problem with them

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 28/01/2013 06:42

They are best on pear shapes ime. I am also size 8-10 but look dreadful in shift dresses, they do nothing for me at all. Prom dresses look best if you have slim shoulders, quite a small bust and a teeny waist. All of my flab is around my bum and hips, and this is helpfully hidden by the big billowy skirt.

GetOrf · 28/01/2013 06:58

I look hideous in them as well. Not really to do with my body shape (slim all over) but I think because they make me feel too girly. I don't know. I really like dresses (wear them all the time) but prefer shift or straight fitted dresses.

They don't suit Colleen Rooney either , and she wears them all the time teamed with massive platforms, and looks ridiculous.

Bearwantsmore · 28/01/2013 14:32

Thanks, glad it's not just me! Maybe the boobs are the issue - I'm still BF so they are bigger than usual - still only 34c though so not exactly huge! More likely to be my tum though Grin

They look foul on me, and thats due to my big rib cage - you just see the bulk, then no waist as the skirt flares out

Hopefully · 28/01/2013 14:40

They are hideous on me - far too prissy and girly for me.

lurkingaround · 28/01/2013 14:48

I am a pear, (or more correctly and X shape, being the possessor of sizeable saddlebags) and I look a bit ridiculous in skater dresses. Too much fabric or something. Theoretically they should suit me, but no, not at all.

TrampyPants · 28/01/2013 14:50

I dont think they look good on anyone over the age of 12. awful.

Lakota · 28/01/2013 14:50

Skater dresses don't even suit skaters.

Lurking I am an X shape too!

lurkingaround · 28/01/2013 14:59

Snap Hopefully! Great to know a fellow X. I will have to watch your style tips!

MrsCampbellBlack · 28/01/2013 15:00

I don't have much of a waist so they look dreadful on me.

No one style is going to suit everyone realistically.

lurkingaround · 28/01/2013 15:07

Hopefully am I right in thinking you have a blog? Will you pm me the details, I'd love to follow you. TIA.

ExRatty · 28/01/2013 15:27

I think they are grim.
Skater dresses maybe okay on sub 20 yo below size 12
Prom dresses are always dire

PretzelTime · 28/01/2013 15:42

I was wondering that too. I'm also an X shape (probably)
The fault of the dresses is that they make your torso look too short and also make you look like a little girl.

ArbitraryUsername · 28/01/2013 15:48

I think the problem is that the torsos are generally too short so you don't get the nipped in at the waist thing; you get a pseudo empire line that completely eradicates any hope of a waist. This is made worse is you have boobs of any note.

That said, I do like them. I just wish the waist was actually anywhere near my waist. This is especially odd as I have a very short body (all my height is in my legs, and I'm not tall). If the waist is too high on me, I dread to think what they are like of women of normal proportions.

IHeartKingThistle · 28/01/2013 16:03

Arbitrary you're right! I have a very long torso and the waists of skater dresses are right up under my boobs Sad. I wear that sort of style a fair bit with a top and separate flarey skirt but just can't get dresses to fit.

Bearwantsmore · 28/01/2013 16:19

Yes arbitrary I think you're spot on! I also have a short torso (am 5'3" but I think my legs are more average as I wear regular length trousers) which is actually a real pain as the shift dresses that I think suit me often don't fit that well as the top half is too long... but that's a whole other issue!

Me too Hopefully. I'd like to follow you if that's ok? Think i've tried before but get the Protected security box??

Hopefully · 28/01/2013 20:45

Ooh, sorry guys, I've been playing with the layout of the blog so I've password protected it while there are photos floating around, half chopped up logos etc! It isn't a pretty sight! It should be up again tomorrow, will post here when it is.

catladycourtney1 · 28/01/2013 20:49

I thought it was just me! The way people go on about them, you'd think they were supposed to be a sort of miracle, suits-everyone dress. I am a genuine fatso but I have a small waist (when I'm not nine months preggo, anyway) compared to my huge boobs, but they still look shit. It looks like I'm trying to hide something... which I suppose I am. My mother insists that fatsos should run like the wind from anything tight, but I will always maintain that I look a million times better - and thinner - in a good body-con dress (with serious control pants and a good bra) than in anything flared or floaty.

Hopefully · 29/01/2013 16:19

MrG and Lurking, just wanted to let you know that the blog is alive and kicking again. Link on my profile page Smile

lurkingaround · 29/01/2013 18:24

Thanks Hopefully. Am now following! Love it.

FrancesFarmer · 29/01/2013 18:43

They are a childish style, as others have said, and don't suit women. Yet another fashion designer fail.
