Sun-In. Anyone got recent experience?

I have experience from when I was 15 and had a perm, (many moons ago), but nothing recent. At the time I thought it was great, but then I was a bit stupid in those days.

I have read people saying they have had a dreadful experience with it and saying don't do it and others saying it was fine for them if used carefully, but then I think it probably depends on what colour you were to start with. I am a dark blonde/light brown so wonder if it would be alright for me.

Anyone used it?
I have no money for normal highlights so it is this or nothing.

I have blonde hair and also had a perm in my, ahem, younger years (am 29) my hair went green.
Nice! Shock

Really?! Did you have a perm when you used it? Why do you think it went green?

Dont do it! My friend turned her mousey hair orange using sun in last year, and she didnt have a perm either.
If you feel brave enough to let a student do it for you then check out your local further education college. At mine highlites are only £12

yorkshirelass79 · 25/04/2006 13:27

No no no no no it's horrible stuff. I have medium brown hair and when I used this (quite a few years ago) it went a horrid orange colour and felt like straw. It was awful and I looked a fright until it had grown out enough to chop into a bob!

WigWamBam · 25/04/2006 13:27

Turned my blond friend's hair bright orange many moons ago. He wasn't very impressed - he was after a nice blond streak and ended up looking like a carrot Grin. It made his hair really dry as well.

Luggs · 25/04/2006 13:35

Same experience as Yorkshirelass - mousey hair went dry and bright orange.

Luggs · 25/04/2006 13:36

forgot to say was a few years ago though - perhaps it has improved!

TheBlonde · 25/04/2006 13:44

I haven't used it for >10 years but if you're not too dark to start with it should be okay

What about one of those home highlighting kits instead with the brushes?

rubles · 25/04/2006 14:44

Have you ever used those home highlighting kits?

Nope never used them but they look alright

Tommy · 25/04/2006 15:19

I use a home highlighting kit (after the highligths at my salon went up to £100 Shock). It's fine - probably better than SunIn I would think. I used it years ago and always like the result but knew more people who didn't like it!

NomDePlume · 25/04/2006 15:24

Sun-In turned my hair orange. Nasty, nasty, nasty and it's a pretty harsh 'recipe', not great for the condition of your hair.

Nixz · 25/04/2006 18:48

Rubles, yes i had a perm when it turned green, it was a bright lime green too! I had to go to the hairdressers and have a special treatment on it!
I have used the home highlighting kits and they are ok, i have never had a problem with them turning a funny colour and i have tried quite a few. Tbh, i know its dated but the best way to get a few highlights is to use a streaking cap as unless you are really talented, then trying to get foil highlights on your own is virtually impossible! I have also tried them ones which have funny brushes and things which you just brush on and they were very tricky and messy aswell.
If you contact a few hairdressers/colleges you may be able to get a student to do your hair with fully qualified supervision for quite cheap.
Hth.
