Who would really spend £300 on a skirt or a top and £500 on boots or a dress?

I would never, ever spend that much and just wondered how many 'normal' (ie not celebrity or super rich) people would.

Not me and it baffles the hell out of me too. There's a good fashion bit in the Guardian Weekend - but the gorgeous trousers will be £200+ etc. I don't actually know anyone who would spend that sort of money.

I often think about this! When I'm reading, say, Marie Claire, there are pages of ££££ clothes - who buys them? I just move on to the 'bargain' high street section (which is still pretty expensive).

Agree. - I earn a good salary and I wouldn't spend that (thoug I am very tight!) so I wonder who does?!

It really bugs me in magazines like Red and Easy Living where I really think labels like jaeger/reiss/lkbennet would be average ish spend range. I think it's so the magazine editors can get freebies and hobnob.

Totally agree - we take the Telegraph at home which I am sure it is for boring, middle aged elderly folk (like us ) yet they have the most ridiculous, outlandish fashion pages, really who buys that sort of crap stuff??

£500 on a decent pair of shoes is an investment! Or at least that's what I tell my DP when I show him them! Same for a lovely dress!

I always wonder what proportion of stuff gets sold at full price and whether it is a relatively small proprtion. I like to buy nice things though not quite at the level mentioned, but a lot of things I buy in the sales and pick up lovely things from selfridges, Harvey nics, my wardrobe, net a porter etc this way plus use codes. For instance My Wardrobe already bombarding with codes that give chunky discounts on new season stock. So many other posters on here seem to do the same. I wonder if a lot of stock is priced with an expectation that it will typically be sold at a generous discount other than to a very small number of people?

A friend of ours is single and a reasonably high earner. He does. But then he has a lot less other stuff to spend money on.

I've spent £400 on a coat but that's very unusual.

I do spend a lot of money on my wardrobe but I nearly always buy at a discount. I will buy the things I absolutely love at full price but mostly I buy in the sale/with a pre-sale code. Plus I get a 30% my wardrobe discount through work, which is very useful. I also buy from Shopbop, for cheaper denim.

For some things yes. I have a Mulberry coat which was eye wateringly expensive 15 years ago. It still looks brand new and was worth every single penny. Same for some Jill Sander trousers, a Boss suit, Vivienne Westwood dresses and skirts. I buy classics that will last, style wise.

I will spend a few hundred on a dress for work or more for a going our outfit. Workwear in particular gets well worn and it lasts .

Nope. I have a Basler coat that I paid over £300 for in 2005. I got it out the other day and it's still almost perfect. But no, I wouldn't. Perhaps one good suit for about £300 but that lasts for years. Apart from that usually Per Una, Boden, Mint Velvet, perhaps a Jaeger skirt in the sale or something from LK B for a very special occasion like a wedding but the few things I own like that have been worth their weight in gold on a cost per wear basis.

I reckon I spend 1500 per year on clothes tops. And that's a lot imo.

Not me. The most I've ever spent is £100 on a leather jacket, and £100ish each on a VW dress and two VW skirts.

I think that when I read Grazia. It isn't exactly a high end glossy, but the clothes are all outrageously priced and don't often have a cheaper alternative.

Having said that, I have spent a nice chunk on certain items, but only if I know they are unlikely to date and the quality is good enough to last years. Mulberry handbags, leather jackets, ankle boots....all cost a fortune, but worth every penny.

No I haven't and couldn't currently. I like to think that I would treat myself if I had pots of money, but I think the reality is that I probably wouldn't be able to bring myself to do it especially if I had a mortgage as I'd feel obliged to use excess money to overpay it.

Somethings are worth spending money on.

I do have £500 dresses and shoes (mostly special occasion) and my jeans, fir example, tend to be around the £150 mark.

I would spend a fortune to replicate the best fitting pair of trousers I own (which are bizarrely from next!)

£300 for a top sounds insane to me, although I'd happily spend that on a pair of sunglasses so horses for courses I guess.

I'm by no means a label snob (see next trousers) but I have gone right off cheap stuff - like bed hair and excessive eyeliner I'm getting too old to pull it off.
