Does anyone dye their own eyelashes?

Can you tell me what you use and how easy it is please? Also any hints and tips! I've had it done professionally a few times but can't really afford to get it done often enough (or the time!)
Would be good to be able to do it regularly at home myself!

I used to do my own for years.

I used Dyelash - but they seem to have made the solution weaker, so it doesn't work as well and now I don't bother and have it done at a saloon.

But tips = I mix it in the little dish with the stick. smear vaseline on your eyelid as close to your lashes as possible and the same underneath.

Then apply the mix with the stick, I dabbed the roots first then used the stick like a mascara wand and did the underneath. Close both eyes and wait 10 mins.

Then bleary eyed make your way to the bathroom and wash both eyes with soap and water to remove. Job done Smile

I've been doing it for over 25 years - black Dylash. Works a treat. It costs about £8 for a box that lasts for several goes.

I used to, with Dyelash. Not sure why I stopped! It's brilliant, really easy to use and much cheaper than paying a salon to do it.

Does anyone know where you can buy a blue-black shade, either online or in a store? Boots only stock Brown or Black so far as I can tell.

HollaAtMeBaby · 20/01/2013 14:15

I do mine once a month but have never bothered with Dyelash - I use professional stuff that I buy from Sally. It comes in blue-black. Currently using a brand called Professional Beauty Systems but have used this in the past and that was fine too. You need to buy the peroxide developing fluid separately and I recommend getting a brush and disposable mascara wands for applying the dye.

If anyone wants more tips, post on this thread and I'll share mine - have got it down to a fine art!

TiredMule · 21/01/2013 13:02

Thanks ladies! So maybe I should get some profesional stuff if dyelash isn't as good as it used to be.

Do you do one eye at a time? I'm worried about physically doing it as when you go to a salon you have your eyes shut, is it ok/easy to do with your eyes open? Or is it as easy as applying mascara?

It's identical to applying mascara, right down to scraping the mistakes off your eyelids. Do a patch test first. I do both eyes at once while watching telly.

You can also dye eyebrows at the same time (only leave that on for a min or two).

So cheering, eyelash dye, because it makes you look better even first thing.

Darn. Lost a riveting insightful and funny post.

Holla, I may get that set from Amazon. Whats your routine and whats your advice re dying eyebrows? PLease?

Sorry not to come back sooner! Anyway, here's my eyelash dying guide:

You will need:
Vaseline
a dinner plate
an eggcup
a small ramekin or similar, half full with cold water
cotton wool pads
cotton buds
a disposable mascara wand (link upthread)
eyelash tint brush (link upthread)
Lash dye goop and solution (link upthread)
Free-standing mirror (I have a magnifying one from Poundland)
Clock, mobile phone or kitchen timer
(optional) rubber gloves to avoid staining fingers

Instructions:

  1. Use fingers to smear Vaseline all around your eyes. Get close to the eyes but don't get any on your lashes.
  2. Sit at a table and put everything on the dinner plate. This will prevent you making dye spots on the table. You may also want to put newspaper on the table.
  3. Put on the rubber gloves if you're using them. Dye takes a couple of days to wash off skin! Wear an old t-shirt.
  4. Mix your dye in the eggcup according to the instructions (squeeze goop from tube, add drops of peroxide solution, stir/mix with disposable mascara wand). Keep eggcup and mascara wand on plate.
  5. Looking in mirror, use the tint brush to paint along roots of upper lashes as if applying liquid eyeliner. Then use mascara brush to apply dye to rest of lashes (top and bottom "sides" of top and bottom lashes). Sometimes it's easier to hold the brush vertically. Make sure you are covering the lashes and getting dye on the tips.
  6. Notice the time or set your timer for 5 mins. Wait. Try to look straight ahead, do not move eyes too much. Watching TV or reading a long thread on MN is a good thing to do at this point. Keep an eye on your lashes in mirror.
  7. If you get any blobs/smears on your skin, dampen a clean cotton bud in the water and use this to take the smear away. If you get any dye in your eyes, it will hurt like crazy. If you can't bear it, dampen a cotton wool pad, take the whole lot off, wait a few minutes for your eyes to calm down and start again.
  8. When 5 minutes have passed, dampen a couple of cotton wool pads in your little bowl of water, squeeze out excess and use the damp pads to wipe off dye as if removing mascara. Be careful to sweep dye away from your eyes and not into them.
  9. Go to nearest sink and rinse eyes thoroughly with cold water. Do not wash with soap as this can lift off the dye. Careful when you dry your face - avoid white towels!
10. Clean tint brush by running under cold tap and wiping with a tissue. Wash up eggcup and plate in normal way. 11. Curl eyelashes, apply clear mascara and flutter away :)

If you find this difficult or have not done it before, doing one eye at a time makes it much easier. You don't need to mix up a second batch of dye if you do the second eye straight after the first, the dye is fine to sit around for 10 minutes.

Holla :)

porridgeLover · 27/01/2013 23:50

Wow, Holla, that is a detailed post!!! Thanks Thank you.

I'm going to do it, darn it, tired of trying to find the time (and £) to get them done professionally.

So, what about eyebrows? I usually ask therapist to them as well and they seem to just apply the tint and wash off almost immediately.

HollaAtMeBaby · 28/01/2013 08:12

You're welcome :) I forgot about eyebrows. Never done mine as they don't really need it and I would be worried about getting dye on my skin. If you're going to try, put vaseline all round the outside and use a mascara brush to stroke a light coating of dye onto the hairs.

Let us know how you get on!

porridgeLover · 05/02/2013 10:36

Holla,
I followed your advice exactly as above. I ordered supplies from Amazon and followed your steps with the page open in front of me. Smile

I am delighted with the result. I think it's not quite as good as going to a salon; however I feel that's due to my inexperience and I expect the effect will be better as I get braver. I was a bit nervous of getting dye in my eye so may have been a bit light-handed with the product. Grin
I even did my brows as I felt braver as I went on.

I cant properly convey how thrilled I am. I have pale blonde eyelashes and brows that 'disappear' without mascara/dye so, for day-to-day maintenance, this will be fab.

Thank you so much Thanks. I wouldnt have been brave enough without your detailed steps.
Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks
