Help! Please recommend some boots that I won't slip over in!!!

Two-three years ago I bought some 'proper' snow boots at last, following a Mumsnet recommendation (Romika, I think). Some that wouldn't slip in the snow/ ice/ slush - an idea that really scares me.

When I went to put them on today to go out in the snow, they weren't wearable any more. So I have no non-slippy boots.

Please can I have recommendations. I don't want them to look hideous but soles that are really made to cope with these conditions are the most important factor. Flat, obviously. Not too long. Neutral colour. Warm, of course. Willing to pay a reasonable amount but prefer to keep under £100 if poss as I'll never be an apres-ski fan!

I'm sure there have been other threads on this, so links to those welcome too.

TIA.

Get some of those things you put over your own boots to make them grippy?

fanoftheinvisibleman · 18/01/2013 22:15

If slipping scares you try some ice grips which you can fit to any boots.

I am terrified after slipping and breaking my nose a few years ago. Ice grips are great.

MN044 · 18/01/2013 22:16

I have these. Waterproof, very very good sole and pretty indestructible.

Trazzletoes · 18/01/2013 22:19

Seriously, get yourself some Yaktrax. About £15, they fit over your existing shoes and give you grip.

I walked down the street quite happily with them on after frozen rain last month - people were crossing roads on their hands and knees because the ground was so slippery.

They are my most favourite things in the world.

Follyfoot · 18/01/2013 22:19

A friend has these. She says they are fantastic.

polyhymnia · 18/01/2013 23:46

Thanis - am definitely going to order the Yaktrax asap, and also look at boot options for slightly longer term.

Second the CAT Anna, they're great.

AKissIsNotAContract · 18/01/2013 23:51

Another vote for yaktraks, they'll go over any boot or shoe.

LaTrucha · 19/01/2013 07:36

I find the problem with yaktraks is that you can;t wear them if there is no snow. So, we have a hill to walk down which is in the shade which stays snowy. It leads to a road which is sunny and doesn't. I need the yak traks to go down the hill but then I have to take them off, which is not that convenient while holding a pushchair.

Trazzletoes · 19/01/2013 07:57

Of course you can wear them on non-snowy bits, just not inside.

louschmoo · 19/01/2013 12:57

Only downside with the Yaktrax is that they can be a bit slippy on inside floors e.g at train stations, so you need to be careful. I have them and they're fab for any outdoor ice and they're fine on non icy/slushy pavements. But if you have to go inside for part of your commute then watch it!

polyhymnia · 19/01/2013 12:58

Thanks - sounds as if they'd be fine for walking to local shops, not good for commuting to town on tube.

I find it really very uncomfortable to wear mine on non-snowy bits, especially pushing a pushchair.

polyhymnia · 19/01/2013 13:59

Ordered them now so will try them out on a short walk at first.

Any further boot suggestions anyone? What about Merrell? Do fancy some with a zip for easy getting on if poss.

I've just worn my Trespass snow boots round to the shops (slushy and icy here)

Not good to drive in though -but that might just be the smallish pedals in my car.

LIZS · 19/01/2013 15:41

I've got these

oliviafrombolivia · 19/01/2013 16:32

I just bought some of these, really pleased with them. Sturdy, warm and waterproof, proper ridged soles that I feel confident in whilst walking on slippery pavements.

I got mine cheaper than that from this place

I bought the boots follyfoot linked a couple of weeks ago. They are great. I haven't tried them with the spikes flipped out for extra grip yet as the snow hasn't been deep enough, but I have remained upright so far. They look quite stylish too.

polyhymnia · 19/01/2013 19:12

Sound amazing with spikes that flip out. What make/style are they?
