Hi can anyone find me an A-line skirt like the one in the middle picture in this link
I need to do a wardrobe overhaul - I'm a classic pear shape but have a collection of pencil skirts and straight/skinny trousers which are all conspiring to make me look like a dumpy carrot

Thanks ujjayi - I've been on a trouser drafting course before and do a bit of dress making. But not done this kind of skirt. I 'll probably make it up in an old sheet first to test the pattern as I find I do better if I've tested the pattern properly.

I'm wanting to go for a Michelle Obama style nipped in waist and skirt look. Have been looking on pinterest at different examples. I agree that you have to watch the length of the skirt and keep it just below the knee

Thanks everyone for the links

Just found some cheaper options by googling for Rockabilly clothing, 50s swing skirt, full circle skirt etc. Nothing exactly like the one pictured, but many with wide waistbands and wide pleats falling into full skirts.

chocolateteabag the LK Bennett ebay one you were looking at is actually tulip shaped, meaning that although it has the lovely full pleats at the top, it narrows at the hem which will add weight to a pear.

Try looking at retro & vintage stores too rather than high street.

Sewing patterns are always written in an entirely different language to standard english. If it makes you feel better, even my lecturers (am fashion student) detest commercial patterns and we therefore make our own - which is easier than it sounds. Whenever I do try and follow a commercial pattern it invariably leaves me flummoxed at some point. The trick is to lay out all your pattern pieces, read through the instructions and then see whether you can work out an easier solution. A box pleat full skirt (i.e. your object of desire) is actually very easy to make.

It's a nice skirt. I'm a bit puzzled as to tights for it as it has a black waistband.

My old skirts that I mentioned upthread were from Matalan and they were great.

Matalan sell skirts exactly like this every year. Don't be put off because it's Matalan, they have some surprisingly good stuff if you're prepared to delve through the more unpromising clothes.

What colour tights and shoes do you wear with navy skirts, folks? I steer clear as I'm never sure!

This is lovely and much fuller than it looks in the pictures - I have spent way too much recently otherwise I would get it.

Huh, you have to pay for returning sale goods Sad

But, I just abandoned my basket partway through and they sent me a code for free postage, so I might risk it after all.

If I had £44 I would. When I was larger I had a couple of skirts like that and wore them a lot. I miss them.

H of F had a gorgeous Ted Baker short sleeved dress in electric blue with a very similar skirt - reduced to 80 quid (still not exactly chicken feed I realise). Dulush it's called, I saw it yesterday and as a pear-shaped person I coveted it deeply but couldn't really see a use for it in my wardrobe. feeble attempt at link from phone

Ah, ok, thanks for checking.

Can I justify £44 for the flannel skirt? Hmmm.. Grin

The code worked for me last night:
Ordered the Canberra Knit skirt which was £24 down to £19.20. Now it's £19 grr a whole 20p
But then also ordered the Cocoon knit jumper which is still £20.70 - but 20% off is £16.56 So I guess I came out ok

It said on my email that the code was exclusive to email listers until midnight then it would be availabe to everyone. I've just had a ook on the site and it looks like they have taken an extra 20% off the sale prices accross the site. The code was just to get mugs like me to place an order quickly, it seems. Grin

Boo the code didn't work for me! Do you know if it has expired, LaTrucha?

I really like the pleated skirt, but can't really afford it at the moment. I can't realy afford the Rothko one either but I have, let us say, ordered it on approval Grin

and a couple of other bits...

chocolateteabag · 17/01/2013 22:37

Ooh thanks Latrucha the Rothko skirt looks a little too short for me but think I might try the pleated midi skirt.
And now looking at the other things still in the sale - an extra 20% off is fab!

So I have clearly been working hard today!
Couldn't find the Vogue pattern - but this Butterick Pattern B5756 is also very similar
It's cheapest on ebay here at £8 as Jaycotts etc charge postage.

Now need to see if I can find the dark Chambray material - like I need another project Grin

Wow! didn't expect this many posts!
Thankyou so much for all the fab links will keep me busy for a while when supposed to be working
Bannoffee - love the ebay LK Bennett one!

Theidsalright I do attempt to sew - but that Vogue pattern is discontinued Sad so will have to hunt for it on ebay (it's not there at the moment).
I think I'll have a crack at making it if I can get the pattern or one similar.
