Comfy, stylish, clothes - what do you wear?

I'm 48 and finally fed up of wearing jeans all the time, which has been my attire for the past 30 odd years!

I'm flying abroad for a few days at the beginning of Feb, with hand luggage only, and I'm looking for a few choice items to take with me that will be comfy to sit/walk in, warm for whilst I'm there (it'll be cold and I'll be walking lots) but still fairly stylish.

I don't do leggings (well, only in the comfort of my own house!) so would be interested to know what casual wear you all go for.

I'm thinking I need two pairs of comfy trousers - not skinnies - and two jumpers/warm tops, maybe some really comfy ankle boots.

(I'm size 12, dark brown hair and eyes, not much of a waist unfortunately Sad.)

I love my landsend suede boots. You'll need warm comfy footwear, so start there?

Trousers would be fine. or what about woolly tights and a shortish skirt/dress to avoid frumpy.
A nice coat, maybe not a fleece? And some warm scarves/snood thing to help keep warm and look stylish. Accessories are easy to pack.

Where are you going?!

itsthesimplethings · 16/01/2013 20:31

Going to Berlin, suspect it could be very cold.

Hadn't thought about Landsend, will take a look there. How are the shoe sizes? I'm usually a size 6 but some can be a bit tight. Are they true to size?

I have a M&S black padded jacket I was going to wear, with a snood and gloves.

I'm struggling to find trousers that I like, that won't be too tight or uncomfy for the flight but still look okay and will keep me warm, i.e. not linen trousers.

I do have a black and white wool coat but think my padded jacket will be warmer.

Fat face do nice trousers. Their sizes come up big though.
Smart enough to wear out with warm jumpers or dress up with a top.
I can wear mine with boots or converse.

itsthesimplethings · 16/01/2013 21:31

Thanks I'll take a look. The trouble I often have with trousers is I have no bum so they go baggy there but are tight on my non existent waist.

Are you sure you don't want skinnies? M and S jeggings are v highly rated on here, they come in a multitude of colours and would be perfect daywear, comfy with boots and coat in say black or navy would go with some nice knitwear.

lurkingfromhome · 17/01/2013 09:22

I would do a comfy dress with coloured thick woolly tights and ankle boots. If it's going to be cold, thermal vest underneath and thermal tights! Nice cardy on top. Otherwise, yes, definitely skinnies, with layered tops (maybe a long T-shirt and a nice shorter jumper on top).

My friend came back from Berlin last night. It's freezing and covered in snow and will still be like this in February. It was last Feb went to visit a friend who lives there.

Layers are the way to go and fur/fleece-lined boots. Thick socks. A hat. Gloves. Either a heavy wool coat you can belt or a down-filled coat.

itsthesimplethings · 17/01/2013 10:40

Still not sure about skinnies, I dislike the fact that a lot of them look like leggings really, the material I mean.

I love the thought of a comfy dress over thick coloured tights and boots but never find suitable dresses. Can you suggest some?

Not surprised it's cold in Berlin at the moment. My coat is down filled, I have snood/hat and gloves, the fur lined boots I have aren't really comfy for walking a lot, my ankle boots are comfier but almost worn out and tend to leak a bit, can't find any anywhere as comfy as these (old Clarks) ones.

I'm not very good at colours, tend to always go for black jeans with grey tops. Help!!

Just looking at M&S jeggings - are there any particularly good ones? How are they in length - I'm 5 feet 7?

OP posts:
ihatethecold · 17/01/2013 10:54

They do 3 different lengths. I true some on yesterday. Very comfy. Lots of colours and not too exp.
the only reason I didn't get any is cos I am skint Grin

itsthesimplethings · 17/01/2013 12:12

I don't think I'll be able to get into town so will have to order online. Might try longer size.

Northern Germany can be very cold at that time of year, it's where my family are from. My latest discovery are fleece tights. I got mine off eBay but I think you can also get them from John Lewis and Asda. Esprit do nice dresses. I'm also a total convert to M&S jeggings much to my surprise. Try some on, they're really comfy and have a nice bit of stretch.

Mockingcurl · 17/01/2013 20:16

I've just come back from Berlin. It was freezing. Everyone wore big quilted coats and woolly hats.

itsthesimplethings · 17/01/2013 22:19

I used to live in North Germany, it does get very cold. I think I'm going to wear my fur lined calf length boots, I've bought some thermal socks too.

Well, I've ordered two different pairs of M&S jeggings, will see what they're like.

Also have ordered (can't get to the shops in the foreseeable future) some black twill stretch trousers in the sale from East and some navy ones from Fat Face.

Can't find any casual dresses I like or ankle boots to go with them. My mind keeps telling me that dresses are for evenings out or for summer! None of the ones I've seen seem suitable for cold weather and I wouldn't know what boots to wear with them. (also can't really afford leather boots as well as clothes. Also I don't do frilly or girly and so many dresses that I've seen seem quite girly.

Nightmare!
