No poo method - coconut oil

DD age 5 has fine curly hair which gets dry and very tangled. I decided to try the no poo method and last night I washed her hair with coconut conditioner - so no shampoo, just the conditioner. I rinsed it LOTS afterwards. And then some. This morning her hair looked really greasy so I had to put it in two tight plats. Did I do something wrong?

Keep going for a bit, try a lighter conditioner if the coconut stuff is too heavy - just make sure its cone-free. Tresemme, naked, organic brands are all cone free. Or just rinse with water some days, co-wash on others. Could take some time to find the right balance for her curls also will take a little while for the hair to settle (up to 6 weeks but you'll see results in 2 honest)
My DD has softer curls than mine, I co-wash hers once a week and comb thru. Rest of the week it gets wet in shower sometimes or I mist it down with a water spray to let the curls reform. Occasionally some olive oil if its dry and fluffing. I co-wash mine every day and comb and sometimes use a wax treatment style conditioner whcih is very heavy. My hair is a lot thicker and curlier than hers.
Also dont let her go do bed with wet hair, it will matt. Wash early enough for it to be mainly dry before bed, or blow dry with a diffuser attachment. If its really greasy now, just rinse with water until it settles. Also if she has cone build up you will need to wash hair with something sulfate free (in a pinch use johnsons baby shampoo - it does have SLS but its not the key ingredient and works ok) to get rid of the silicone coating on the hair, then stay cone free after that.
My girls hair will dread at the back over a week so I cut it in a nape/chin length bob with bangs. The bonus is kiddie curls are easy to cut at home in these kind of styles because a bit of irregulaity is just cute rather than a mess. Longer would require plaits or pony to stop the tangling getting out of hand.
I couldnt recommend the curly girl book enough. Talks through diff curl types, make at home treatments, chemicals to watch out for and how to cut it.

Thank you Firsttimer, I appreciate that. I am guilty of sending her to bed with wet hair. I thought that'd be good for the curls. Would you plat her hair losely for bedtime so that it is not tangled in the morning?

Yes thats a good idea.

I also think you need to do a SLS-free shampoo to get rid of build up and effectively start your no-poo method. Without that you will be working against a silicone coating on the hair and it wont work. So shampoo SLS free tonight or even with SLS just this once, condition and comb. Dry before bed and plait. Then work out a wetting, conditioning routine that suits her and dont use shampoo again for at least 4 weeks. I only ever use shampoo to wash out the products my hairdresser uses - thats about once every 3 months so 4 weeks is short and you may find you need to shampoo far less often than that - ideally shampoo should be SLS free. It is the most brilliant thing and I promise you will not look back.

I hope you're right! Thank you Thanks
