Natural hair dyes - any recommendations?

Have got a few greys coming through now but I don't really get on too well with home hair dye (it doesn't seem to stay) and would rather use something natural anyway. Has anyone used any natural hair dyes - henna etc, and what products do you recommend? Am
not too well-off so nothing too expensive please!

Lush Henna is really good. Obviously more for red or brown/black hair. It is messy but worth it. Makes your hair very shiney. Has to be used every 3-5 weeks for greys. Makes the greys a coppery colour and blends them in.

Ooh sounds good, will give it a try. My hair is mid-dark brown but can look reddish so that might work for me. Thanks :)

I agree with jelly - Lush henna is brill.

Has anyone tried the henna creams such as Surya henna?

I want to try a more natural colour but am afraid it might go a weird colour Confused

I used body quality henna and indigo (stops it going orange) from mehandi. I find the lush hennas can be dry and the stuff they add in (coffee etc) irritates my scalp more than chemical dyes .... Although I used to leave it in overnight so this might have been the problem.

I've used Naturtint from Holland and Barratt a few times. The colour is comes out really well (I used a dark brown) and a lot more natural looking than other home dyes I've used. Only drawback is that it washes out much faster than the more chemical dyes (even the permanent version!) so is more expensive in the long run.

I used that a couple of times Casting. It was still coming off my hair onto towels each time I washed it a couple of weeks later. I was not impressed. It was the Reflex colour one, is that the one you have used?

CastingNasturtiums · 14/01/2013 17:01

I used both Agatha, I think the Reflex one is their 'semi-permanent' one but it washed out in two washes for me - didn't notice any on my towels, guess it all went down the plughole! Their 'permanent' isn't called Reflex, think it's just called Naturtint Permanent, and it washed out within a month. And I don't wash my hair everyday...

BUT I do like the colour - their chestnut brown came out proper chestnut brown rather than red, unlike all other brands I've tried.

AgathaF · 14/01/2013 17:09

The colour was good, I do remember that. I like the Lush henna colour though too - I use 2/3 marron and 1/3 noir and get a really good deep chestnut colour with that.

Ooh lots of food for thought here ladies. I can't usually be arsed with colouring as my hair is super thick and currently pretty long - but might try some of these - will start with Lush I think and go from there. Will I need more than one 'brick' for long thick hair?
