For a c section scar. I've seen the boots own brand. Any good? Any others which are better? Total waste of money?

I think probably a waste of money. Speaking as someone who has had 4 major stomach operations I think that while the scars are relatively "new" (ie. red and angry) you might rub some sort of oil ( sweet almond maybe) to maybe help a bit ..... After that stage I think there is nothing to be done. I don't know whether this is your first section but if it is I would offer that they DO fade quite a bit over time. As I said I have had 3 section- type surgeries and 1 massive scar that runs from section line up into my belly button. The scars themselves a few years on are really not that bad. Fortunately/ Unfortunately I think the biggest factor in your scars appearance is down to the skin you have inherited. Some people scar worse than others. < waiting now for someone to tell us both about a MIRACLE cream.....for record I did use BioOil etc for a period but it wasn't doing anything to warrant continuing it >

I'm a big fan of trilogy rosehip oil, don't know if you can get it in the uk though. It is a miracle oil. You could try to find a substitute rosehip product, maybe?

I'm using Bio Oil on my scar, and it is healing really well - that said, I don't know how it would have looked if I'd not used it, or had used anything else.
There is a product called Heal Gel Intensive that was developed by plastic surgeons that is supposed to be very good, it retails around £38.
Like p&s says, I think that the way you heal and how your scar forms is genetic, so I guess what works for one may be less effective on another.
I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone has any 'miracle' produts!

cardoon · 05/01/2013 16:51

this is a miracle product! Treated with care and washed every day or two will last months.

WitchOfEndor · 05/01/2013 16:55

There is a mumsnet product test on kelo-cote on the top of the Active page right now. Looks like it is effective.

Piemother · 05/01/2013 18:09

Thanks folks. It's a second section scar. It's not do bad really I just wondered if any of this stuff works. I don't think bio oil does much for me but a friend used it on self harm scars and they went from angry pink (not new scars thiough) to faint white - I have seGrinn the evidence it can work v well Grin

Im taking part in the kelo-cote test mentioned and we got some samples of it along with our test pack. Take a look at the mumsnet product test feedback and i'll happily send you mine if you wanna try it? Its very good.

Decleor prolagene gel is good for scars. SBC collagen gel may help too - I've only used it on stretch marks but it seemed to help them go from purple to silver fairly quickly.

cedge · 06/01/2013 23:32

I would have thought that laser is the only thing that could significantly improve scarring.

Valdeeves · 06/01/2013 23:52

You can get Kelocote on the NHS - it comes in gel sheets or gel.

aVentingAngel · 07/01/2013 08:20

I tried one of the scar gel patches (Elastoplast?) on a very small scar that was several years old until the packet ran out; it definitely reduced it. I keep thinking I should have another go and it might reduce even further.

HazleNutt · 07/01/2013 09:07

I have a thyroidectomy scar on my neck and used:
www.victoriahealth.com/product/Heal-Gel/6171/0/
and
www.mamamio.com/uk/see-no-scar-solution.html

of course, it's difficult to say if they really made a difference or if it would have healed the same way anyway - but you can barely see anything, so I'm very happy with the result.

PacificDogwood · 07/01/2013 09:11

How old is your current section scar?

Is it lumpy or stretched (wide) or just pink/purple?

How good a scar looks in the longrun depends on skin-type, location, complications etc etc. It takes a year or two for scars to fully 'mature' ie shrink and pale down to the colour they are going to be longterm.

Haelan tape can help improve v lumpy (keloid) scars.
All the oils in the world will help keep a scar more subtle and soft, but no more. I get quite pissed off a the claims Bio-Oil makes in its advertising...

See this - should answer all your questions -

EauDeChlorine · 09/03/2020 07:21

My daughter was recommended castor oil by a plastic surgeon and to keep the scar covered from sunlight for 2 years. The scar is now completely gone.
