Finding it hard to dress like a slim person since losing weight

During the last 3 months or so I've lost about 10lbs and started doing a lot more exercise. I'm now 10st and a size 12 (I'm 5ft 9ins). The consequence is that for the first time in about 15 years I feel slim and a little bit wonderful.

The problem is I don't know how to dress like a slim person. I'm still dressing mainly in my old clothes which either hang off me and/or look dowdy.

I've tried to buy new outfits but I still stick to the same old styles, essentially jeans and a baggy top. I work from home so don't need business wear, but stylish casual is what I aspire to.

Dress me please.

Get yourself down to Primark and bag yourself some super soft skinny jeans in a variety of colours. While there pick up some vest tops to wear under some light weight sheer shirts. Have a look at some threads re slouchy jumpers and the perfect boot hunt and you are good to go.

Are you sure you are a size 12 even? From a lot of the threads on here I would say that people of your weight/height say they are in a 10 in today's generous sizes. (I notice because I am a bit taller and lighter than you so tend to notice what people of around our proportions say.) I think you should be trying a 10 as well to ensure you get the best fit. Hard to advise what to wear without knowing a bit more about your shape - best/worst bits, apple or pear etc?

kaumana - I've got heavy legs (still) so couldn't do skinnies, but i'll certainly consider the vest tops under sheer shirts option.

mystery - I may be able to get into some size 10s; Next, maybe?

I believe my legs are my worse bit and my top half my best (sporty looking, rather than volumptuous).

I'm 50 ish, but like to think I present as younger deluded old bint

I think you have to rethink how you look to others. 5'9 and 10st is slim and I bet you have far better legs than you imagine. This is why you have to at least try on clothes that you would have not worn in the past. Take an honest friend on a trying out spree and make a point of trying clothes on "just to see".

Also, can you take it in stages - so sort out jeans that fit first (as trousers will not look good if too big whereas with certain styles of tops you can get away with baggy, maybe!) and then see what tops go with the new style and size?

If you can't face a trawl through shops, you could look online. But IME it's an expensive and time consuming game if you don't know what you're after - and you get to know the PO counter staff rather wellXmas Smile. Oh, I will miss the festive smilies when they go Xmas Sad. There is a website where you can key in all your vital stats and they tell you what size you are in various shops. It might give you a starting point.

Another idea is to go to a department store - eg JL - and get a personal shopper to help you to find stuff that suits.

Thanks for that basket. I think you're right about the need to sort out my jeans/trousers first. I wore an old, businessy looking pair today for a meeting; they just looked wrong because they are now simply the wrong size and made me look a bit silly Blush

Congratulations. It's a great feeling. Have fun in the sales.

I found wearing figure hugging clothes made me feel a million pounds after losing weight.

Tops & dresses from Isabella Oliver, skinny jeans, long necklaces and chunky bangles all helped
